Honored to be part of the Wira Kita event at Mitsubishi Motors - EAM Kota Kinabalu 4S Centre and to share a little bit of my journey.

One of the questions I was asked was, “What drove you to be brave and strong in the cage?"

I think sometimes people assume that athletes don’t feel fear. We do.

I’ve felt nervous. I’ve felt anxious. I’ve felt the pressure that comes before performing on a big stage.

For me, courage was never about not being afraid. Courage was being afraid and still choosing to step forward.

And a lot of that courage came from preparation.

The hours of training. The repetition. Working with my coaches and teammates. Sharpening my skills over and over again until I could trust what I had prepared for.

I think the same applies outside the cage.

Sometimes we wait until we feel confident enough before we start something. But often, confidence doesn’t come first.

Action comes first.

You take the first step. You do it again. You learn. You improve. And little by little, you begin to trust yourself more.

Fear may still be there, but it no longer gets to decide what you do.

And that, to me, is courage.

I usually share my journey with corporate audiences, so I’m especially looking forward to bringing this conversation back to where so much of my own journey began - martial arts.
