Happy New Year!!! Getting ready for more scrumptious dinner today? Try this:

Domaine Gayda “Chemin de Moscou” 2017, Languedoc, France
Grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault

Domaine Gayda was kind of always around. It started in the 18th century as a rest area for travellers. Horses were fed and changed before continuing their journey through Europe. More precisely, “Chemin de Moscou” is the original name of the land where the vineyard stands today. Its most famous landmark was the giant pine (the Moscou tree) which was used by pioneers as a navigation tool. Perpignan --> this way! That tree burned down 20 years ago during a lightening storm. Fortunately, what remains is a beautiful estate that produces delectable organic wines! This one is my favourite, a full expression of fruits such as dark cherries and plums with a smooth yet dense spiced palate.

Merry Christmas everyone! Let's pop one of these today, shall we?

Franck Massard “Mas Sardana Cava” NV, Penedés, Spain
Grapes: Xarel.lo, Macabeo, Parellada

I am someone who really loves craft. Even if I’m not crafty myself haha! This is why I always look at the winemaker when I want to know more about a wine. Yes, the history of the land is important but it is truly the person behind the label who can bring a grape to life! This is why I love Franck Massard. He started as a sommelier and became super big because, the guy is talented! Looking for the next step, he decided to start his own vineyard in 2004 in Priorat (not bad for a start!). Since, he’s been transforming old tired lands into beautiful eco-systems, prioritising natural winemaking. His cava “Mas Sardana” is a beautiful example of his talent, mixing up citrus and nuts, freshness and creaminess. Splendid!

Oooh that sweet sweet taste of orange wine...

Il Carpino “Malvasia IGT” 2012, Friuli, Italy
Grape: Malvasia

During my last European trip, I had the chance to meet a wine agent representing Eastern European countries like Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and Georgia. I’ve learned through her, that most of the winemakers sold their land to bigger wineries and whoever was left made natural wine. She said that everyone just called it “wine” because they never used anything bad aka chemicals to farm their land. For this month, I chose to bring back this type of wine and will be going with Il Carpino, a 30 year old vineyard from San Floriano del Collio in Italy. Right next to the border of Slovenia. This wine was fermented in Slavonian casks with a short skin contact to give extra dept and flavours. It also colours the wine orange. Which is what you call: an orange wine! Rich and intense scent of dried fruits and honey with a full bodied, smooth and complex palate.

"But Nico, how come I've never seen these wines before?" you must think. Well, my little pleasure in life is to make you discover new labels that are normally reserved for a handful of places in KL. Fear not! You have me now. So just sit back, have a sip and enjoy the trip!

Telmo Rodriguez “Basa Blanco” 2016, Ribera Del Duero, Spain
Grape: Verdejo, Viura

Young vineyard created by Telmo and Pablo after years of traveling through Spain. Their discovery? Many abandoned lands that have so much potential for wine making. Their solution? Get to work, revive these old bits of paradise and re-introduce local Spanish grapes to the world! What is amazing with these guys is that all of their vineyards are completely different. Regions, soils, grapes… you name it! They’ve worked extra hard to make sure that their wines have the best expression of the land where they’re from. Now, they have over 300 little plots across the country and they are working with more than 40 different types of native grapes! Oh and all that while using sustainable techniques and organic farming. Easy-peasy! This wine a beautiful introduction to Verdejo (90%) with floral aromas, great freshness and superb texture.

Veni, Vidi, Vici. That's exactly what happened when we received this wine!

Damien Coquelet “Chiroubles” 2017, Beaujolais, France
Grape: Gamay

It’s been a while since we had new arrival in KL. Covid-19 and the constant change of government didn’t really help the import of wine in Malaysia. For someone like me who is always looking for new labels, this Damien Coquelet made me sit straight on my chair and shake like a little kid! This guy learned how to be a winemaker at 10 years old (!) before starting his own vineyard at 20 (!!). His style is super current, using semi-carbonic maceration and concrete ageing as his trademark. “Chiroubles” is an exciting Gamay that gives us a good mixture of black fruits and cranberries and a beautiful minerality. Since it’s 100% natural, I like to pour it from high up to air it and liberate the CO2. Served chill.

Remember when you received this one?

Sybille K***z “Qualitätswein Trocken” 2013, Mosel, Germany
Grape: Riesling

I love Sybille K***z! This boss-woman knows how to grow Riesling and she does it on these super steep slopes without the help of fertilisers, herbicides or other chemicals. Her vineyards are greeeeeen my friend. Full of biodiversity! She makes six different wines showcasing the versatility of Riesling. This is her Qualitätswein meaning that the grapes are collected on the first week of the harvest, when the grapes are ripe and green. It’s a dry style with minerality and a tone of freshness. Not bad for some 50 years old vines!

Did you manage to get your hands on one of these?

Jean-Baptiste Sénat “Le Bois des Merveilles” 2017, Languedoc-Rousillon, France
Grapes: Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre

JB and his wife Charlotte left their cozy Parisian life in 1995 to start a new adventure on a farm in Minervois. Farm, vineyard, same same. Your hands get dirty. Especially if you do everything by hands and practice biodynamic farming AKA workyoursoillikeits1699 farming. Since then, JB has mastered the world of Grenache which he uses for all his wines. Speaking of fermented grape juice, the power couple like it authentic. No flafla. Jean-Baptiste often compares his wines to a woman without make-up, preferring natural beauty. “Le Bois des Merveilles” is a beautiful blend of grapes growing near the forest surrounding the vineyard. This one is for those who like fine wines with freshness and character. Its optimum drinkability is more around 2022 but hey, we’re not that far off!

What a find!

Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot “Crémant Rosé” NV, Côtes du Jura, France
Grapes: Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Poulsard

I am so happy that people start to explore other French wine regions like Jura! The more diverse, the better. Stéphane’s parents started their own vineyard in the 60s and soon, he was full on into the work. I mean, his first cuvée was when he was 19 years old. Who else can say something like that!? His style was a bit different than his peers, preferring spontaneous fermentation over the addition of yeast. Later, he converted to organic farming, then biodynamic. By that time, he had already made a name for himself and shown the world the future of Jura’s wines. This is his “Crémant Rosé” aka sparkling-Champagne-non-Champagne-rosé. Lively yet refined, red berries heaven, just enough minerality and a touch of flower scent! That’s what’s waiting for you ~

POULE DAY!!!

With Maison PUR “Swimming Poule” 2019, Beaujolais, France
Grape: Sauvignon

I mean… the name says it all! This is your all-day, all natural, poolside, funky sunglasses, oversize hat, she likes it, he likes it, they like it kinda wine! I’ve followed the winemakers Cyril Alonso and Florian Looze for a few years now and I love their initiatives to unite wine growers from the South of France and create fun and vibrant wines using only grapes grown naturally. They buy grapes from these different small farmers and work their magic from there. Their names and labels are also genius! I love play on words ESPECIALLY when it includes animals. So there you go ma poule, another summer wine just for you!

Feeling cozy with this Allegrini “Palazzo della Torre IGT” 2016, Veneto, Italy
Grape: Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, Sangiovese

When I started to drink wine for real (like, remembering grapes and regions), I was telling everyone that my favourite type of wine was Amarone Della Valpolicella. Well, if I have other fans of Amarone here, let me introduce you to “Palazzo Della Torre”! Both are using the same process of drying Corvina grapes to get this concentrated grape liquid (I feel like juice is too juicy to be employed here). For PDT, the ageing process is 15 months in used oak barrel followed by seven months in bottle before release. Basically, the kind of quality you would expect from a family who has been running their winery for more than 400 years. Did I mentioned that they prefer biodiversity rather than using chemicals? No wonder it tastes so good!

Mondays suck, but even if it's laundry day, I am filled with joy & Château de Roquefort “Le Petit Salé” 2019, Bouches du Rhône, France ☁️🌥⛅🌤🌞
Grapes: Clairette, Vermentino

I love to discover a new and interesting blend! This one comes from the “oh so picturesque” region of Provence and gives me all the freshness and minerality that I want. The owner, Raymond, has positioned his vineyard North-West, in rocky clay/limestone soil, to achieve that kind of signature taste. I’m also a sucker for Vermentino so, I just had to! Hey, it’s also good for you, ok? Organic, biodynamic, dithyrambic… you name it!

Don’t you just love it when you receive a parcel after waiting for it for what seems like forever? Well, let’s just say that KL just got a lot more exciting with the arrival of the Sons of Wine’s labels!

Sons of Wine “404 Erreur Pas de Sulfites” 2019, Alsace, France
Grape: Verdejo

Farid Yahimi, the man behind it all, has proven to the world his passion for making natural wine. The guy is impressive: almost 20 years of natural wine making, co-founder of the Association des Vins Naturels, first natural wine merchant in Alsace… That says a lot but it is really when you try his wines that you understand the beauty of it all. Not afraid to experiment (playing with Verdejo in Alsace???), all his wines are made with zero sulphite. This sparkling wine is not like your Champagne, Prosecco or Cava. It is a pétillant naturel meaning that it was naturally fermented in bottle, making it fizzy. Pure freshness!
