It became a reminder that awareness is where change begins.

Through reflection, journaling, and honest conversations, we were reminded that our stories, our struggles, and our second chances carry power.

At The Spunky, The Rebel & A Mama , we believe our lived experiences are not meant to stay hidden.

They are meant to create hope, spark empowerment, build changemakers, and help liberate others who may still be finding their way.

My story is featured in today’s The Star newspaper on page 8.

Ten years ago, I was involved in a gas explosion. A life-changing moment that deeply affected not only me, but also my family.

Having walked this journey, I understand the pain and challenges that burn survivors go through, especially during the initial stages of recovery. That is why, together with my fellow survivors, we want to help build a Burn Survivor Support Society in Malaysia.

I know this journey will not be easy, but anything truly meaningful never is.

Ten years ago, a moment changed everything.
A few days ago, I witnessed what it means to choose life… again and again.

I attended Eileyn’s 10-year burnaversary and the soft launch of her book, When an Explosion Knocks You Down 🤍

It has been 10 years—not just of surviving, but of choosing to live, every single day.

That day, I shared something that stayed with me as I was reading her book. Sometimes, when we are deep in our own struggles, we feel alone. We think we understand what others are going through based on what we see or what we think we know. But this book gently shifts that perspective.

Eileyn opens a window into the lives of others—survivors of all kinds, caregivers, and hospital staff—reminding us that even if our experiences are different, the emotions are often more similar than we realise.

Reading her book made me pause and reflect on the things I often take for granted—the ability to move, to breathe, to feel, and to love.

And one reminder stayed with me deeply: hope is not something far away. It is something we can return to, again and again.

That day was not just about celebrating her journey. It became a quiet reminder of our own.

I decided to celebrate my 10th burn anniversary at PARC, Subang on 4 April 2026, as I was already in Kuala Lumpur. It also happened to fall over the Easter weekend.

While many in the Chinese community tend to avoid the number 4, I chose to embrace it and move forward with a “Celebration of Life” theme, marking this meaningful milestone with family and friends—because ten years ago, I nearly lost my life, and today, simply being alive is something I deeply celebrate.

As I hadn’t had a formal launch for my book, I also took the opportunity to celebrate both occasions at once.

Overall, it was a wonderful success, and I am especially grateful for the chance to reconnect with people I had lost touch with over the years.

When I began sharing my story as a burn survivor during the Covid-19 pandemic, my goal was to raise awareness in Malaysia. At that time, I never imagined that one day I’d be invited to speak on an international platform.

Now, I have the opportunity to share my story during World Burns Week, from November 4 to 8, 2024. I am the only speaker from Malaysia.

So, what is the real cost of surviving a burn? I’d say it’s impossible to quantify.
