I wholeheartedly agree with Idris Jala and Leon Jala that creating a successful education system lies in the development of structured pedagogy.

This means learning from and replicating the best practices of exemplary schools, educators and teaching methodologies. Notable examples include Datin Chan of Sri KDU, who has set benchmarks in private education, and Cikgu Jaul Bunyau of SK Ulu Lubai, Limbang, Sarawak, whose efforts transformed his rural school into a national treasure.

In June 2024, Cikgu Jaul was recognised by the Sarawak government as Tokoh Guru Sarawak 2024 for his incredible achievement in turning SK Ulu Lubai into the renowned “Permata Belantara”. This transformation is a testament to the power of structured teaching methods and the impact they can have on students and communities.

To replicate such success, the government should consider providing teacher allowances for a two-week camp during school holidays dedicated to developing structured syllabi and standardised modules for the upcoming term.

This initiative would ensure consistent and high-quality education across all schools nationwide. By doing so, we could achieve a significant and measurable improvement in student outcomes, laying the foundation for a brighter and more equitable future.

This concept mirrors what we practice in the world of 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, where success is driven by the principle of replication and standardisation. Franchisees thrive by duplicating the franchisor’s tested and proven business model, which covers every aspect of operations — from daily workflows, bookkeeping, sales and marketing, to product and service quality, branding, and even outlet design. Attention to detail is key, down to standard operating procedures for simple tasks like floor sweeping. Success is ensured through ongoing training, monitoring and continuous refinement.

The Singapore Franchise & Licensing Asia (FLAsia) Exhibition and Conference 2024 has long been recognised as the premier platform for franchising and licensing opportunities in Asia. My recent trip to this prestigious event was not only an eye-opening experience but also a testament to the thriving entrepreneurial spirit that defines the region.

Held at the grand Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 12 to 14 September 2024, FLAsia2024 attracted businesses and entrepreneurs from all over the globe. The bustling exhibition hall featured an impressive lineup of brands across various industries, including food and beverage, retail, education and wellness. Each booth was a showcase of innovation, with companies presenting their latest products, services and franchise models to potential investors.

One of the most striking aspects of the event was the seamless blend of traditional business concepts with cutting-edge technology. From AI-driven business models to eco-friendly practices, the exhibition highlighted how franchising is evolving to meet the demands of the modern consumer.

The accompanying conference sessions were equally enriching. Renowned industry leaders and experts shared insights into emerging trends, successful franchise management, and the impact of digital transformation on the franchise ecosystem. Attendees were treated to case studies, keynote speeches and panel discussions that provided invaluable knowledge on scaling businesses and navigating the intricacies of international franchising.

[Putrajaya, 13 August 2024] — In a significant meeting held today at Perdana Leadership Foundation, Putrajaya, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, welcomed the editors of the highly acclaimed Franchise Book, “Building The Next Multi-Million Franchise Empire: Guiding You Through To Become A Successful Franchisepreneur”.

The courtesy visit aimed to discuss various issues as well as to seek wisdom and guidance from Tun Dr Mahathir concerning franchising and entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

During the meeting, Tun Dr Mahathir emphasised the importance of franchising as a key driver for economic growth for Malaysia.

He shared his extensive experience and views on why he foresaw the potential of franchising that encouraged him to initiate the Franchise Development Programme in 1992.

He also highlighted the critical role of franchising in fostering innovation and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Tun Dr Mahathir advised the entrepreneurs to record every business transaction as an essential business practice, crucial for maintaining financial transparency and ensuring accurate profitability tracking.

“One of the things I think that we should always do is to learn to record things. Write down every transaction daily on a small book immediately whenever there is a business, and later transfer to the main book. Make it a habit,” he emphasised.

Tun Dr Mahathir expressed his appreciation for the diligent work and thorough research presented in the Franchise Book, which covers the history, best practices, challenges, success stories and trends in the franchising world.

He suggested that the book could be an invaluable resource for aspiring franchise owners and existing franchise operators.

He also recommended that the editors consider developing a compact version of the book, emphasising key concepts to enhance ease of reference and understanding for entrepreneurs aspiring to enter the franchising sector.

Editors, Datuk Wira Haji Mohd Latip Sarrugi and Sean Lum, provided insights into the latest trends and developments on franchising and entrepreneurship, addressed the challenges faced by the franchise industry including regulatory hurdles, access to financing and the necessity for continuous training and development.

This Franchise Book is very unique and probably the first of its kind, compiling the collective wisdom of 22 distinguished professionals from diverse fields, who are meticulously curated and have made significant contributions to their respective industries.

The book aims to provide comprehensive insights, practical advice, tactics and solutions, to navigating the complexities of contemporary challenges, offering readers a source of inspiration and guidance drawn from the wealth of experience and knowledge by these distinguished individuals, not only to inspire more entrepreneurs to embark into franchising but also to create Malaysian content for the world !

The meeting concluded with Tun Dr Mahathir commended the editors and authors for successfully becoming a prime mover for their contribution to the franchising and entrepreneurial community.
