When i get asked on franchise related matters, theres always some confusion on the franchise industry specific terms. So i'm just going to add these franchise terminologies as a refresher or for the newcomers in franchising so that you have a clear understanding of each term.
1.Franchisor:
The franchisor is the company or individual that owns and operates the original business concept, brand, and operating system. They grant the rights to use their business model to independent entrepreneurs, known as franchisees, in exchange for initial fees and ongoing royalties.
2. Franchisee:
The franchisee is the individual or entity that purchases the right to operate a franchised business under the franchisor's established brand and business model. The franchisee benefits from the use of the franchisor's trademarks, support, and access to a proven system while adhering to the franchisor's guidelines and paying ongoing fees.
3. Master Franchisee:
In international or multi-unit expansion scenarios, the franchisor may appoint a master franchisee. The master franchisee is responsible for selling and operating multiple franchises in that region, acting as an intermediary between the franchisor and individual franchisees.
4. Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD):
The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) is a legal document that franchisors are required to provide to potential franchisees before the sale of any franchise. It contains essential information about the franchise system, including the company's background, financial performance, fees, obligations as well as any prior legal issues.
5. Royalties:
Royalties are ongoing fees paid by the franchisee to the franchisor. Typically calculated as a percentage of the franchisee's gross sales, royalties cover the use of the franchisor's brand, ongoing support, and access to the operating system.
6. Franchise Fee:
The franchise fee is the initial payment made by the franchisee to the franchisor to secure the right to operate a franchise. This fee covers the cost of initial training, support, and access to the franchisor's proprietary systems.
7. Territory:
Territory refers to the geographic area within which the franchisee has the exclusive right to operate the franchise. It may be protected, ensuring no other franchises of the same brand can open within that specified region.
8. Understanding the roles of the franchisor, franchisee, master franchisee, along with the significance of the FDD, royalties, franchise fee, territory etc. empowers individuals to make informed decisions and embark on a successful franchising journey. I hope that this post assists or provides a clearer understanding on the franchise terminologies
