Strengthening Cooperative Integration Across IMT-GT & ASEAN 🤝🌏

The IMT-GT Joint Business Council (JBC) is pleased to collaborate with the Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) and the Malaysian National Cooperative Federation (ANGKASA) in organising the IMT-GT Strategic Roundtable Discussion & ASEAN Co-operative Organization (ACO) Annual General Meeting 2026, held on 20–21 May 2026 at Ixora Hotel Prai, Penang.

Carrying the theme:

“Seamless Cooperation: Integrating Retail, Consumerism, and Tourism across the IMT-GT and ASEAN”

this important regional programme serves as a strategic platform towards the establishment and institutionalisation of the Cooperative Joint Council (CJC) under the IMT-GT framework.

The programme is a continuation of the successful COOP@IMT-GT Conference 2024, which laid the foundation for stronger collaboration between the cooperative sector and regional stakeholders across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

The initiative also comes at a significant time following the official accreditation of the ASEAN Co-operative Organization (ACO) as an ASEAN Associate, further strengthening the role of cooperatives within the broader ASEAN regional cooperation landscape.

The Roundtable Discussion focused on deliberating the proposed establishment of the Cooperative Joint Council (CJC) — envisioned as a permanent institutional platform representing the cooperative movement within the IMT-GT and ASEAN economic cooperation agenda.

ANGKASA and ASEAN Co-operative Organization (ACO) President, Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah, highlighted that the establishment of the CJC would enable cooperatives in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand to collaborate more strategically across various business sectors.

Meanwhile, IMT-GT JBC Director, Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Mahadi Mohamad emphasised that the CJC would provide the cooperative sector with a formal and structured platform within the IMT-GT JBC framework, strengthening cooperative participation in regional economic integration and private-sector-driven initiatives.

The programme brought together representatives from cooperative apex bodies, IMT-GT stakeholders, government agencies, private sector representatives, and regional institutions — reflecting a shared commitment towards inclusive, community-driven, and sustainable economic growth across the subregion.

This marks another important milestone in advancing stronger regional collaboration under the IMT-GT framework and elevating the cooperative movement as a strategic economic force within ASEAN.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity Through Kelantan Day @ Jakarta 🇲🇾🇮🇩

Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Mahadi Mohamad, Director of IMT-GT Joint Business Council (JBC) Malaysia, was honoured to attend the Kelantan Day @ Jakarta programme held on 14 May 2026 at Four Points by Sheraton Jakarta, following an official invitation from the Kelantan State Economic Planning Unit.

The programme was organised in conjunction with the launch of the direct Kota Bharu – Jakarta flight route — a significant milestone in enhancing economic, tourism and business connectivity between Malaysia and Indonesia.

The event was led by YAB Ustaz Dato’ Panglima Perang Dato’ Haji Mohd Nassuruddin Bin Haji Daud, Chief Minister of Kelantan, together with members of the Kelantan State Executive Council, the State Secretary of Kelantan, senior government officials, industry players, and representatives from AirAsia Indonesia.

As the private sector arm of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), JBC views initiatives such as this as an important catalyst in strengthening regional economic integration, cross-border collaboration, tourism connectivity, and business-to-business engagement between the two neighbouring economies.

The programme also provided valuable opportunities for participants to:

✅ Explore new trade and investment opportunities between Kelantan and Indonesia
✅ Build strategic business networks with industry players and relevant agencies
✅ Gain exposure to emerging cross-border initiatives and market opportunities

The introduction of the direct Kota Bharu–Jakarta route represents more than improved connectivity — it opens new pathways for partnerships, investment flows, tourism growth and people-to-people engagement across the region.

Congratulations to the State Government of Kelantan and all stakeholders involved in making this initiative a meaningful step forward for regional cooperation.

Driving Regional Impact: JBC at the 19th IMT-GT Strategic Planning Meeting, Bangkok 🇹🇭

The IMT-GT Joint Business Council (JBC) proudly convened its Breakout Session alongside the 19th IMT-GT Strategic Planning Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand — bringing strong private sector momentum into the regional agenda.

Representing JBC Malaysia, Mr. Amzar Azhar and Mr. Khairulnikman shared progress updates on strategic initiatives that are shaping the future of IMT-GT cooperation:-

🌱 IMT-GT & BIMP-EAGA Green City Action Plan (GCAP) – advancing sustainable, low-carbon urban development
🏆 IMT-GT Regional Business Excellence Awards (RBEA) – celebrating and elevating regional business champions

🤝 Kunjungan Hormat & Pembentangan Kemajuan Pelan Tindakan Bandar Hijau (GCAP) di bawah RMKe-12 🌱

Wakil daripada Asian Development Bank (ADB), ICLEI South Asia dan IMT-GT Joint Business Council (JBC) yang diketuai oleh Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Mahadi Mohamad telah mengadakan kunjungan hormat ke atas Datuk Dr. Zunika Mohamed, Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha (Dasar), Kementerian Ekonomi.

Sesi pertemuan ini bertujuan untuk membentangkan perkembangan terkini Pelan Tindakan Bandar Hijau (Green City Action Plan, GCAP) di bawah Rancangan Malaysia Ke-12 (RMKe-12). Pasukan telah memaklumkan Datuk Dr. Zunika mengenai kemajuan signifikan yang telah dicapai bagi Subprojek 2, khususnya kejayaan pelaksanaan aktiviti pengumpulan data sepanjang tahun lalu di lima bandar terlibat iaitu Ipoh, Manjung, Teluk Intan, Kulim Hi-Tech Park dan Kangar, yang dilaksanakan secara bersama oleh ADB, ICLEI South Asia dan JBC.

Dalam pertemuan ini, pasukan turut mengambil kesempatan untuk membentangkan draf dokumen GCAP bagi kelima-lima bandar, termasuk profil bandar, keutamaan tindakan, cadangan projek serta hala tuju pelaksanaan yang telah dikenal pasti.

Pihak kami merakamkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan atas sokongan berterusan Datuk Dr. Zunika dan Kementerian Ekonomi terhadap pelaksanaan GCAP dan menyatakan komitmen untuk memastikan pelan-pelan ini diintegrasikan serta diselaraskan dengan dasar, strategi dan pelan pembangunan sedia ada negara, selaras dengan aspirasi untuk memacu pembangunan bandar hijau, rendah karbon dan mampan di Malaysia.
