FT CLUB Badan Beruniform Series #4: Kadet Remaja Sekolah (KRS)

Did you know KRS started with just 20 students in a single KL school — and has since grown into one of the most established school uniformed bodies in Malaysia?

Kadet Remaja Sekolah (KRS) was founded on 27 June 1987 by En. Muhammad Thani Bin Sha'aban at Sekolah Menengah Raja Abdullah, Jalan Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. It started under the name Kadet Putera Islam Malaysia (KPIM), a uniformed unit open only to the school's Islamic Students Association — beginning with just 20 Form 1 and Form 2 students. By 1989, other schools in the Federal Territories joined in, and by 1993, 53 secondary schools nationwide had already established the unit.

In October 1993, the Ministry of Education made a landmark decision: rename it Kadet Remaja Sekolah (KRS) and open membership to all races, both male and female. The official national launch followed on 20 June 1995, officiated by the then-Minister of Education, Dato' Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, at the very school where it all began.

The goal? To build students who are disciplined, principled, and community-driven — captured in KRS's three-core motto:
🔹 ILMU (Knowledge) — intellectual and skill development
🔹 IMAN (Faith) — strong values and character
🔹 AMAL (Practice) — turning discipline into daily action
Training covers kawad kaki, camping, jungle navigation, first aid, and obstacle courses — all managed by teacher-officers under the Ministry of Education.

And of course… the uniform
KRS members are instantly recognisable in their signature dark green uniform — a sharp, structured look complete with beret, name tag, rank badges, and lanyard. For formal occasions, members add gloves and additional insignia, reflecting rank and pride within the unit.

Fun fact
KRS also has a primary school arm — Tunas Kadet Remaja Sekolah (TKRS) — making it one of the few Badan Beruniform in Malaysia with structured programmes from primary through secondary school. The journey starts early!

Latest development
In June 2025, the Perkhemahan Madani KRS & TKRS at the national level was held at Kem Bina Semangat Yayasan Selangor, Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor — organised by the Ministry of Education's Sports, Co-Curricular and Arts Division. A strong sign that KRS continues to thrive at the highest level.

FT CLUB Badan Beruniform Series #3: Kadet Polis

Did you know Malaysia has been grooming young "guardians of the law" since 1970?

Kor Kadet Polis Di Raja Malaysia (KKPDRM) was officially launched on 2 March 1970, championed by the second Inspector-General of Police, the late Tun Mohamed Salleh Ismail, under Section 68 of the Police Act 1967. According to a Sinar Bestari article in 2023, more than 600 platoons exist across secondary schools nationwide, with nearly 21,000 cadet members and 600 senior officers.

The goal? To shape disciplined, law-abiding, community-responsible citizens. Training covers kawad kaki, annual camping, law lectures, first aid, community service, navigation, and obstacle courses.

But the standout? Actual fi****ms training!
Unlike most other school Badan Beruniform, KKPDRM cadets receive structured training on the M16 rifle and revolver — including stripping, assembling, cleaning, loading, firing positions, and live shooting. All conducted under strict PDRM supervision. It's as real as it gets for a school co-curricular activity!

The signature dark navy blue (biru hitam) uniform mirrors the PDRM police uniform closely — complete with beret, rank insignia, PDRM belt, black leather shoes, and name tags. Ranks run from Kadet through Lans Koperal, Koperal, Sarjan, to Sarjan Mejar Kadet

FT CLUB Badan Beruniform Series #2: Kadet Pertahanan Awam

Did you know Malaysia has been grooming young emergency responders and community heroes since the 1990s?

Kadet Sekolah Pertahanan Awam (KASPA) is the school-level arm of Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (APM) — Malaysia’s official civil defence force. Introduced in schools starting 1993 and strengthened in 1997, KASPA acts as a training ground for students to learn real-life emergency and disaster response skills early on.

Think of it this way:
👉 APM protects the public during emergencies
👉 KASPA prepares students to do the same in the future

The goal? Not just to respond to disasters — but to build disciplined, responsible, and community-driven individuals. Through KASPA, students are exposed to practical skills such as first aid, firefighting basics, rescue techniques, disaster preparedness, and survival skills — all while developing teamwork, leadership, and a strong sense of service.

It’s one of the most meaningful Badan Beruniform because members are trained to:
🚑 Help others in emergencies
🚑 Stay calm under pressure
🚑 Serve the community without discrimination

In fact, the programme reflects the core spirit of APM:
👉 “Sentiasa Siap Sedia” (Always Ready)

And of course… the uniform 👕

KASPA is instantly recognisable with its signature orange identity, symbolising safety, visibility, and readiness in emergency situations. Members typically wear

Accessories such as beret, belt, badges, and shoulder insignia reflect rank, structure, and discipline — just like a real emergency response unit.

📊 Fun fact 👀
KASPA units are structured like real teams, with ranks such as Lans Koperal, Koperal, Sarjan, and Pegawai Waran Kadet — giving students early exposure to leadership and responsibility.

FT CLUB Badan Beruniform Series #1: Kadet Bomba 🚒

Did you know Malaysia has been grooming young “firefighters” since 1985?

Kadet Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia first started at MRSM Sultan Abdul Samad, before being officially expanded nationwide in 1989 as part of the school co-curricular programme. Today, it continues to play an important role in shaping disciplined, capable and community-driven students.

The goal? Not to fight fires (yet 😆), but to build real-life skills that matter — from fire prevention and first aid to rescue basics, teamwork, and staying calm under pressure. It’s easily one of the most hands-on and action-packed Badan Beruniform in Malaysian schools.

As of recent estimates, there are ~90,000 Kadet Bomba members nationwide, with continued expansion efforts including the planned introduction of 46 Bomba Junior teams across the country in 2024, as well as the rollout of Bomba Cilik programmes at the kindergarten level, nurturing fire safety awareness from an even younger age.

The bold orange-and-black firefighter-inspired uniform, makes Kadet Bomba instantly recognisable — bold, functional, and inspired by real firefighting gear. Alongside this, members also wear the pakaian latihan, typically a dark blue top paired with camouflage pants for drills and training. For more formal settings, a full set complete with beret, belt, and badges is worn, representing identity, rank, and discipline within the unit.

🌙 Raya Confirmed! Mark Your Calendar for 21 March 🎉

It’s official! Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia will fall on Saturday, 21 March 2026. The announcement was made by the Penyimpan Mohor Besar Raja-Raja, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, following the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers.

The date determination is based on the Imkanur rukyah criteria where the new moon must meet specific visibility conditions (minimum altitude of 3° and angular distance of 6.4° at sunset). This marks the beginning of Syawal 1447H and the end of Ramadan 🌙

Did you know? Co-curricular activities in Malaysia are actually compulsory — not just “extra” school activities.

Introduced during the pre-independence era and formalised in the 1980s, co-curricular programmes are designed to develop well-rounded students beyond academics. Today, every student typically participates in three main categories: uniformed bodies, sports and games, and clubs & societies — building discipline, teamwork, leadership, and confidence along the way.

It’s also more structured than you think!

Students are assessed based on attendance, participation, and achievements through systems like PAJSK — and these scores can even contribute to university applications and scholarships.

From marching drills to sports practice and club meetings, co-curricular is a big part of growing up in Malaysia.

Want to learn more about why school systems emphasise structure and discipline like this? Check out this article for more insights : https://www.nst.com.my/news/2015/09/co-curricular-activities-are-crucial

And of course, having the right attire makes all the difference in comfort and confidence.

🌙✨ Balik Kampung Mode: ON as School Holiday Starts Tomorrow!

Term 1 school holidays are finally here — and this year, it comes with extra excitement as it overlaps with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Even better, there’s an additional school holiday on 18 March 2026, giving families an earlier head start for travel, preparation, and celebration. https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2026/03/1394234/moe-declares-march-18-additional-school-holiday-aidilfitri

Here’s a quick breakdown so you can plan ahead:

Kumpulan A (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu):
18 March – 28 March 2026

Kumpulan B (rest of Malaysia including KL, Selangor, Penang, etc.):
18 March – 29 March 2026

Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Public Holiday – All States):
20 March – 23 March 2026

With the added holiday and festive celebrations, this creates a longer and more meaningful break — perfect for balik kampung, spending time with loved ones, and resetting before the next school term.

Before the holidays fly by, it’s also the ideal time to get school essentials sorted. Instead of rushing last minute before school reopens, take this opportunity to drop by FT CLUB to stock up on school uniforms and co-curricular activity wear. Whether it’s replacing outgrown uniforms, topping up sports attire, or simply getting organised early, a little preparation now goes a long way.

Wishing everyone a safe and smooth balik kampung journey. Stay hydrated, celebrate responsibly, and enjoy the festive season with your loved ones. Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri in advance! 🌙

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry (MoE) has declared March 18, 2026 as an additional school holiday for all schools nationwide in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

🎒 Fun fact about Malaysian school uniforms!

Did you know Malaysia has one of the most standardised school uniform systems in the world? Western-style uniforms were first introduced during the 19th century, and by 1970, school uniforms became compulsory nationwide to promote discipline and reduce socio-economic differences among students.

The rules were later formalised through Surat Pekeliling Ikhtisas Bil. 3/1983, making most public school uniforms almost identical across the country — with the school badge being the key difference between schools.

🇲🇾 A recent update: starting 21 April 2025, all public school uniforms must include a Jalur Gemilang badge on the right chest, aimed at strengthening patriotism and national identity among students.

Simple outfit, but decades of history behind it.

💬 What’s your strongest memory of wearing your school uniform?
