Significant effort and dedication are required because the material may 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 not only on visible surfaces but also within 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗿 “𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻” 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 of the equipment.

If not properly removed, these residues can remain a 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸.

❓ 𝗤𝟮: 𝗜𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲?

However, a more plausible ignition source could be the presence of 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘀 or 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 within the dust collection system.

Such contaminants may introduce 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀.

For 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to occur, the material must satisfy the 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, including:

Indicators vary depending on the material involved.

For organic materials stored in bulk or piles:

• Faint white gaseous emission
• External surface warmth
• Material discolouration

These signs may indicate self-heating processes developing within the bulk material.

For pyrophoric metals:

• Rapid oxidation when metal powders react with air
• Possible indicators include glowing/sparking, heat emission, odour, and discolouration

🔍 𝗤𝟮: What is the investigation approach?

Investigations follow the 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱, with careful evaluation of:

• Self-heating indicators
• Material properties
• Environmental and storage conditions

Understanding the interaction between material, environment, and time is critical in determining whether spontaneous ignition is a plausible cause.

⚠️ 𝗤𝟯: What material is commonly overlooked during risk surveys?

One frequently overlooked material is 𝗡𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲.

Despite its widespread industrial use, nitrocellulose can present significant self-heating and fire risks if improperly stored or handled.

Was the observable burn mark on a printed circuit board a 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 sign of a lightning strike?

Were 𝗮𝗹𝗹 the damaged items truly affected by lightning?

Can a 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 fire be disguised as a lightning strike claim?

These were some of the thought-provoking questions explored during our recent 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 session with the team from Sedgwick Malaysia.

Mr Naim Iman delivered the session with clarity and practical insight, confidently navigating complex 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀 and real claim situations.

We truly appreciate the strong participation and thoughtful discussions. Although the session ran longer than scheduled, the depth of engagement reflected the importance of 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in lightning strike claims.
