Seawater contamination remains one of the more challenging aspects in marine cargo investigations due to the corrosive nature of salt deposits and the possibility of progressive deterioration long after the incident.

Key questions commonly encountered include:

• What was the actual source of contamination?

• 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹, and how quickly can deterioration occur?
