There are numerous disciplines to learn and understand people, and one of them is psychology. Psychologists study brain functions, emotions, cognition, and the development of relationships between people. In psychology, we find the field of psychometrics where scientific methods and quantitative measures are used to better analyse and understand the psychological variables of a person, such as personality, aptitude, intelligence and emotions. If competence alone determined success, hiring would be simple.

Find the most technically capable candidate and the role should work out.

Yet many organisations have experienced the opposite — technically strong individuals struggling in roles where they seemed perfectly qualified.

Because every role demands a different behavioural pattern.

Some require decisive leadership.
Others demand structured thinking, collaboration, or comfort with ambiguity.

When behaviour and role demands don’t align, even highly capable individuals can struggle.

Talent success is not just about what someone can do.

Last week we explored why hiring outcomes often reflect the systems surrounding the role — not just recruitment decisions.

When a hire fails, the instinctive reaction is simple:
