Malaysia is a popular destination for student groups from the Netherlands. This week we got a visit from (Juridische Faculteitsvereniging Groningen (JFV)), the main study association of the faculty of law of the University of Groningen. To help ensure a smooth and informed trip, Economic Officer at and MDBC (SIP) Manager ( ) gave a presentation about , the work of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Malaysia, and MDBC.
The students, like many others in the Netherlands, have learnt about the benefits of Malaysia and the local business community, as well as the opportunities available. This is a positive that students who have participated in have learned first hand. So are you interested in a regular internship for 4.5 - 5 months in tropical Malaysia? Hi everyone, my name is and over the past few months I have been doing my internship in Malaysia. Through a friend of mine, I got in touch with (SIP Manager) from MDBC; I had already heard many great stories about the Student Internship Program (SIP). Those expectations were more than met.

My internship was very diverse. I worked at the office five days a week, where I was involved in finance - related tasks such as working with the cashbox and extensive Excel work. At the same time, I regularly joined customer visits and supported the acquisition of new clients. This mix of office - based work and hands - on business experience made the internship both challenging and educational.

The MYLAPS team truly included me in everything. I was able to attend all meetings and felt like a full member of the team from day one. I am currently finishing my bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Economics, and this internship taught me a great deal about doing business in Asia and how business practices differ in this region. I also supported various sales activities, which gave me valuable real - world experience.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to take part in several unique activities. I attended a race at the Sepang Circuit, travelled to the Maldives to support DMRR2025, joined the Garmin Asia Distributor Meeting 2025 in Penang, and was present at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. These experiences made my internship truly unforgettable. Outside of work, there was also plenty to explore. I ran the Bangkok half marathon, travelled to Bali, and explored different parts of Malaysia.

During the weekdays, I often played padel, and there was a great Dutch community, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

If you are considering an internship abroad, I can highly recommend MDBC and Malaysia. It has been a unique experience both professionally and personally, and one that I would recommend to anyone.

A throwback to the Student Internship Program (SIP) in 2016. But did you know that the program even started earlier, namely 22 years ago in 2004, with one student placed directly with MDBC itself? The program continued to grow and we can proudly claim over 1,550 have undertaken an internship in Malaysia via our program. Join us as we peek into the program as it was a decade ago. Every face carries a story, and every story has woven together into a rich tapestry that makes up SIP. If you want to be part of the story, please contact Jolande at [email protected] or register directly via the link in the bio🌴💻🇲🇾!

Learn more about with another !

Hi everyone, my name is Hidde and I’m currently doing an internship within the operations management department at Besi APac (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. After completing my BSc in Business Administration at the University of Groningen and my MSc in Transport & Supply Chain Management at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I wanted to gain some international experience, preferably in Southeast Asia. Through MDBC, I was introduced to Besi, which I was immediately curious and excited about.

Unlike other students, I wasn’t tied to any specific university requirements for my internship, so this gave me the freedom to choose a project that fit my interests. After an orientation period with my supervisors, I started working on my project focused on inventory management. I’m building a model that helps optimize the first phase of machine assembly at a material level, which fits perfectly with my enthusiasm for operations and .

An important aspect of this experience has been learning about Malaysian culture, both in the workplace and everyday life. If you say culture in Malaysia, you say food. People really take the time to enjoy their meals here, whether it’s lunch or dinner, and it creates a social atmosphere. It’s a great way to connect with colleagues and locals and to get an idea of how people live here.

Outside of work, I live with two other Dutch interns in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, and there’s always something happening in the city. We often go out for food together, play padel, or have a drink at the Havana bar. With the group of interns, we’ve also travelled to the Perhentian Islands, Cameron Highlands, Bali, and Bangkok, where my housemates and I ran a half marathon.

I’ve now been in Kuala Lumpur for three months, and the time has really flown by. There is so much to see and experience alongside the internship itself. If you’re considering doing an internship abroad, I would really recommend doing it here. This experience has exceeded my expectations, and I’d happily stay longer.

Not all are with MDBC member companies. Some are directly with MDBC itself! Led by Jolande Jonge Poerink (SIP Manager) provides enthusiastic and knowledgeable interns, helping us (and our member - companies) complete projects and essential services as they gain valuable experience. This SIP Adventure is with Jochem van Est, let’s read on to learn more!

Hello my name is Jochem van Est. I study International Business at the Hanze UAS in Groningen and I am doing a 5 - month internship at MDBC in Kuala Lumpur.  At I am responsible for the ASEAN Dutch Chamber Network ( ) where I facilitate meetings between the directors and make and distribute the ADCN newsletter. In addition to ADCN I also do work directly for MDBC itself where I assist with events, the membership survey and marketing activities.

This is internship is a great to learn how to adapt to different work environments and develop my skills in cross - cultural communication and professional networking. Beyond the internship itself I also had the chance to travel on the weekends and visit many places such as Malacca, Ipoh, and Sumatra (Indonesia). I would highly recommend any student to work or study abroad at least once during their studies if they get the chance 🌴💻🇲🇾!

MDBC’s Student Internship Program, or , led by Jolande Jonge Poerink, has been pairing enthusiastic Dutch students with MDBC member companies since 2004. In addition to providing enthusiastic and knowledgeable interns, as well as encourage the sharing of best practices, SIP provides the groundwork for increased ties between the Netherlands and Malaysia by establishing a bond between the interns and the country.

One SIP intern currently finishing her here in Malaysia is Laura Schmitz. Read on to see what Laura’s SIP Adventure is like!

Hi my name is Laura Schmitz and for the past four months, I have been working as a marketing intern at IGL Coatings in Kuala Lumpur. I am a BSc Business Administration at VU Amsterdam.

At IGL Coatings, in the marketing team, I helped plan and run campaigns, created and shared social media content, supported events, and managed relationships with customers and partners.  At the same time, I researched how we could use data to reach more people, see what content worked best, and make our social media channels more effective.

This internship was a chance to learn more about marketing and to experience a different culture. Our colleagues let us try all kinds of local food, including durian. We also attended several events such as MotoGP and 86Fest, where we even got the chance to drive a lap on the circuit.

Besides being a great learning experience, I also had a great time with the other interns. We went on trips together to Perhentian, Melaka, and Bali (Indonesia). There were plenty of sports activities as well, and I played hockey, squash, and padel with other Dutchies.

I spent four months in Malaysia, but I definitely wouldn’t have minded staying an extra month in Kuala Lumpur. If you’re looking for an internship abroad, I definitely recommend it. The experience was even better than I expected.
