Learn more about with another ! MDBC’s SIP. Led by Jolande Jonge Poerink, SIP pairs enthusiastic Dutch students with member companies. In addition to providing enthusiastic and knowledgeable interns, as well as encourage the sharing of best practices, SIP helps strengthen ties between the Netherlands and Malaysia.

This time, we hear from .335 , a third - year Business Administration student at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Hi everyone, my name is Umair and I’m currently doing an internship in the logistics department at IGL Coatings in Shah Alam, Malaysia. I always wanted to do an internship abroad, because I thought working in a different and would be a great learning experience and a chance to travel and see the world. Through an information session on my campus, I came across MDBC.

What I enjoy most about my internship is how varied it is. I work on different tasks and projects, from export documents to dangerous goods shipments and communication with carriers like FedEx and DHL. I also often work together with other departments, so no two days are the same. It’s a great way to learn how a company runs from the inside and to get a feel for supply chain in practice.

Another big part of this experience has been getting to know Malaysian culture. Compared to the Western “work, work, work” mentality, people here are much more laid back. You notice it in the lunch breaks, and on Fridays I get a break so I can go to Friday prayer. Through MDBC I found a great group of friends who I’ve become very close with over the past two months. During the week I mostly go to the gym, cook, and take care of things at home. On weekends we go on trips and explore. So far I’ve been to the Perhentian Islands, Georgetown, Ipoh, Cameron Highlands, and Singapore. Nationally, Langkawi and Melaka are still on the list, as well as Vietnam and Thailand regionally.
If you’re also considering an internship abroad, I would 100% recommend it.

Most students started their internships in Malaysia in September, but every now and then we get to welcome a few later arrivals too! 🇲🇾🌴
Today we kicked things off with a small cultural briefing, followed by lunch together. A great way to get to know Malaysia, each other, and prepare for the adventure ahead!

It was an orange takeover at Sepang this past weekend🧡🏎🏁‍. An epic Dutch weekend in Malaysia, with‍ Max Verstappen taking the win in Formula 1 🏆 on his return to the SIC! What an unforgettable weekend for Dutch fans in Malaysia 🇳🇱🇲🇾. Martin Garrix closed the weekend with a live set 🎶, and our Dutch student interns (and some of their supervisors 😃) were right in the middle of the orange crowd. It even rained, so they felt right at home ☔.

This is what an internship in Malaysia can look like. 🇲🇾 Malaysia is a gateway to ASEAN, one of the fastest - growing regions in the world 🌏, and home to an active Dutch business community in energy, logistics, agri - food and tech. English is widely spoken, so you can focus on the work instead of the language. You get real responsibility from day one 🚀, and a network that is happy to welcome you. The food is excellent too 🍜. A large new group of Dutch students has started their internships in Malaysia! 🇲🇾🌴To help our new interns get off to a great start, we organised a cultural briefing and dinner: an opportunity to learn more about Malaysian culture and life in Malaysia, while also meeting fellow interns and making new connections.
During the briefing, Firoz Ehsan, Second Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malaysia NLinMalaysia, Dhiva Krishanan, from Cultural Impact, and Jolande Jonge Poerink, Manager of the MDBC (SIP), shared insights into Malaysia, Malaysian culture, the work of the Dutch Embassy, and MDBC.

🚴‍♀️🌴 Twice this week we planned a bicycle tour with MikeBikes. The first tour had to be rescheduled due to Malaysia’s famous tropical rain showers. The second time we decided to go ahead anyway... and once again, the rain joined us! ☔😄
Luckily, these showers are usually short-lived, and Malaysia enjoys warm tropical weather all year round, with temperatures around 30°C. ☀️🇲🇾
