Environmental impacts include the loss or degradation of forests, as illegal logging tends to be associated with poor forest management. This can result in the loss of habitats and biodiversity. For example, illegal logging is threatening the survival of some of the world’s most endangered primate, including orang utans in Indonesia and the Siberian tiger.

The environment also suffers when floods happen. Chemicals and other hazardous substances end up in the water and eventually contaminate the water bodies that floods end up in. In 2011, a huge tsunami hit Japan, and sea water flooded a part of the coastline. The flooding caused massive leakage in nuclear plants and has since caused high radiation in that area. Authorities in Japan fear that Fukushima radiation levels are 18 times higher than even thought.

Additionally, flooding causes kills animals, and others insects are introduced to affected areas, distorting the natural balance of the ecosystem.

One of the major effects of oil spill is seen on the economy. When precious crude oil or refined petroleum is lost, it effects the amount of petroleum and gas available for use. This means more barrels have to be imported from other countries. Then comes the process of cleaning the oil spill, which requires a lot of financing. Although the company responsible for the oil spills and their effects has to clean it up, there is a lot of government help required at this point.

The workers that are brought on board to clean up the spill face tremendous health problems later in life as well. Their medical treatment has to be paid for and becomes the responsibility of the government. Putting all the methods of recovery into place and monitoring them takes away resources from other more important work and hits the economy in subtle but powerful ways.

World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and conserve the world's oceans. It also provides an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources.

The conservation action theme for World Oceans Day 2018 will be preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. This World Oceans Day let us all do something as individuals to reduce our plastic consumption. Remember: Use less plastic and recycle the plastic you must use.

One-third of global fish stocks are overfished, much caught illegally (FAO, 2017) – a theft of around $24 billion annually from the economies of fishing communities. FAO notes there is a need for effective management to restore the overfished stocks including tuna. Millions of people rely on the oceans for their livelihoods, so marine resources need to be sustainably managed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The World Tuna Day is celebrated every 2 May as an important step in recognizing the critical role of tuna to sustainable development, food security, economic opportunity, and livelihoods of people around the world.
