When I started teaching my children life skills when they were quite young, surprisingly I encountered criticism. And from mothers. Not many, but a few who had their own agenda. But I persevered.
One day I will not be here. And my kids will need to go on without me. They need to be prepared.
At Sophie's Place, we help children discover their talents and interests, and we also help them become as independent as possible.
Here my kids participated in a bazaar under the Autism Cafe Project held at We Rock the Spectrum, Evolve Mall.
12-year-old Tareq, who has been cooking and selling chicken rice, was helped by his special needs brothers Mirza and Shiraz. Some of the valuable skills learned here are selling, speaking to potential customers, describing the product, as well as hand-eye coordination used when packing the chicken rice, not to mention using Math when calculating the cost.
Tareq was given the task of keeping count of the number of sales, and at the end of the session, he deducted the percentage owed to ACP, and proceeded to pay Adli by himself.
Each of them received a portion of the profits in accordance to their contribution.
All of us continually sell ourselves on a daily basis - during interviews, as sales people, as parents and teachers. We get better as we go along, and we start believing in our capabilities, and our confidence grows.
Who do you know who may benefit from our program?
