There is an old Cantonese saying for this: 鸡同鸭讲 which translates to the chicken talking to the duck. Two creatures, same farmyard, completely different languages. Nobody is wrong. Nobody is stupid. They simply cannot hear each other.

This is one of the most common communication failures in organisations and it has nothing to do with the quality of the content.

Different people primarily process information differently. Visual thinkers need to see the framework, the map, the diagram. Auditory thinkers need to hear it discussed as having a dialogue is how understanding becomes real for them. Kinaesthetic thinkers need to do something with the idea before they get it.

During townhalls and meetings, communication is usually designed for one, maybe two of these modes. The slide deck and the presentation covers visual and auditory reasonably well. Kinaesthetic thinkers sit through it politely and disengage and look at their phones or start dreaming of their next vacation.

You can often hear which mode someone is operating in. Visual thinkers say "I can see your point." Auditory thinkers say "I hear what you're saying." Kinaesthetic thinkers say "I need to get a grip on this." These are not figures of speech. They are the system speaking.

The best facilitation deliberately weaves all three together because genuine comprehension requires every person in the room to receive the information in a form their system can actually use.

If your last strategy session produced mixed levels of buy-in, it may not have been a motivation problem but a mode problem.

The chicken and the duck were in the same room. They just needed someone to translate.

Most leaders are highly aware of their own preferred mode and naturally design communication that works for people like them.

People act consistently with who they believe they are, not what they are told.

Nadella didn't fix Microsoft by training people in new skills. He shifted the identity of 200,000 employees from "know-it-alls" to "learn-it-alls" and the behaviour followed. It wasn't mandated but because that is what people like them do.

This means "Who are we as a team?" is a performance question not a philosophical question.

A team that sees itself as a group of individual performers will optimise for individual performance, even when the task requires collaboration. A team that sees itself as a unit that wins or loses together will share information, cover gaps, and hold each other to account without being asked.

The work before the work is identity. Everything else builds on top of it.

You've been the strong one for a long time.
For the business. For the team. For the family.

At some point that stops being sustainable and starts being just the way things are.

Slow Lines is six days in Penang for people who are ready to put that down for a while.

Small group. Everything taken care of. To feel more alive than you have in years.

Six days where nobody needs anything from you.

Your team is not asking you for certainty right now.
They are asking for steadiness. They want to know someone is present, that the organisation is not in freefall, and that it is safe to keep doing their work.
Those are very different things. And you can offer all of them without pretending to know how the next six months will unfold.
The most powerful thing you can do for your team right now is model what functional uncertainty looks like. Acknowledge what is hard. Be transparent about what is on hold and why. Keep the focus on what the team can affect.
This is not soft leadership. It is the hardest kind.

The best team experiences don't separate fun from performance.

They integrate them so that participants can't quite tell where one ends and the other begins.

Csikszentmihalyi's flow research tells us that the conditions that produce genuine enjoyment and the conditions that produce peak performance are, at their core, the same conditions. Clear goals. Matched challenge and skill. Immediate feedback. A sense of control.

This has real implications for how team programmes are designed and facilitated.

New on the BEP blog this week: why flourishing at work requires integrated wellbeing and performance design, and what flow science tells us about how to get there.

One leadership habit we admire the most.
The ability to say:
“That’s a good idea. Let’s try it.”

Not every leader needs to have the answer.
Sometimes the best leaders are the ones who create space for other people’s ideas to grow.

Before every programme starts, there’s always a moment like this.

Money put aside. Swords and guns placed on tables. Markers ready.

The room is quiet… but not for long.

In about 20 minutes, teams will walk in and the entire space will be buzzing with ideas, laughter, and the occasional friendly competition with some "negotiations" involved.

One of our favourite moments during a team building session:

When the room goes from polite silence…to full strategy mode.

Suddenly everyone is debating, sketching ideas, moving chairs, testing solutions.

That shift is when collaboration actually starts happening.

The energy in the room completely changes.

It’s been quiet here for a while but behind the scenes things have been anything but quiet.

For many years, Best Events Productions focused on exhibitions and conferences. They were exciting, large-scale, and brought people together in powerful ways.

But as the world of work changes, we’ve been asking ourselves a bigger question:

What do teams and leaders really need now? What are people feeling now?

More conversations later, the direction became clear.

We’re moving our focus toward team building, art and culture, and slow travel programmes that bring people closer to nature, culture, and meaningful conversations.

Less rushing between booths and stages.
More thinking, exploring, and working better together.

Malaysia is full of incredible forests, towns, stories, and communities and we’re excited to design experiences that help teams rediscover them.

This next chapter is going to be a fun one.

If you could be anywhere in Malaysia for a reset, where would it be?
