MTCC was established in October 1998 as an independent organisation to develop and operate the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS). As a voluntary national scheme, the MTCS provides for independent assessment of forest management practices, to ensure the sustainable management of Malaysia’s natural forest and forest plantations, as well as to meet the demand for certified timber products.

On International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) reaffirms its commitment to sustainable forest management in conjunction with this year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact.”

Through Malaysia’s national timber certification scheme, the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), MTCC promotes sustainable forest management practices guided by requirements under the MC&I SFM standard that support the conservation of biological diversity, protection of forest ecosystems and environmentally sensitive areas, and safeguarding of rare, threatened and endangered species, while minimising adverse environmental impacts.

Kuala Lumpur, 21 May 2026 - The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) held its monthly MTCS/PEFC Chain of Custody (COC) Virtual Onboarding Session yesterday, welcoming a total of 32 participants, including newly certified COC certificate holders.

The session was divided into two key areas of focus. Ms. Nur Fatin Athirah Ahmad Rizal, Executive COC, walked participants through the requirements and operational implementation of MTCS/PEFC COC certification, including the correct and proper use of PEFC trademarks. Ms. Prahashini Galadaran, Senior Executive, Market Engagement, highlighted how MTCS/PEFC COC certification translates into real business value, such as access to corporate and government procurement, meeting ESG reporting requirements and pe*******on to international markets.

The session provided space for open discussion and Q&A, with participants gaining practical insights on putting their certification to work from day one. Held monthly, the COC Onboarding Session is open to newly certified companies as well as existing certificate holders looking to refresh their understanding.

VACANCY: DIRECTOR, CHAIN OF CUSTODY (COC)

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC), a leading advocate for sustainable forest management, is seeking an experienced and strategic Director, Chain of Custody (COC) to lead a critical unit within our organisation in Kuala Lumpur.

This senior leadership role is central to the development, implementation, and oversight of COC certification under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS). The successful candidate will lead the preparation of national standards and guidelines, serve as MTCC's technical expert for PEFC and other stakeholders, and drive initiatives that uphold the sustainability, legality, and market acceptance of MTCS/PEFC-certified timber products.

We are looking for a seasoned professional with a minimum of ten years of experience in ESG, supply chain management, or a related field, with a strong understanding of timber certification standards and international trade. Familiarity with MTCS and PEFC is a distinct advantage.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) is participating in the PEFC Forest Forum 2026 and PEFC General Assembly, held in Türkiye from 11 to 15 May 2026. MTCC is represented at the event by its Director of Communication and Marketing, Mr. Muhammad Hasif Azizan, and Senior Executive, Chain of Custody, Ms. Adibah Aris.

On Day 1 (11 May), MTCC participated in the Marketing, Communication and Advocacy Working Group meeting, contributing to discussions on strengthening advocacy within PEFC, enhancing alignment between technical outputs and communications, and improving regional visibility, including for Asia.

On Day 2 (12 May), Mr. Hasif presented MTCC’s latest developments during the Members Marketplace session. The presentation underscored continued progress in reinforcing international confidence in the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), including the decision by the Government of the Netherlands to maintain its recognition under the Dutch Timber Procurement Policy.

MTCC also showcased Malaysia’s first PEFC Project Certification involving the revitalisation of the Petaling Street Archway, demonstrating the application of MTCS/PEFC-certified timber in supporting sustainable urban development and climate-smart construction.

On Day 3 (13 May), MTCC participated in the 34th PEFC General Assembly in Istanbul, Türkiye, represented by Mr. Hasif and Ms. Adibah as part of the delegation engaging in voting and formal proceedings.

MTCC also contributed to the Asia-Pacific Regional Hub session, where members exchanged updates within their respective national governing bodies. MTCC shared key developments on Forest Management and Chain of Custody certification status, PEFC EUDR Due Diligence System adoption, export trends, alignment of the MTCS Sustainable Forest Management standard with PEFC ST 1003:2024, progress on Malaysia’s first PEFC Project Certification, as well as the publication of the revised Complaints Handling and Dispute Resolution Mechanism Guidelines.

The session also reflected broader regional developments, with members noting increasing emphasis on EUDR compliance, carbon and ecosystem services, green building, sustainable packaging, and biomass-related certification, highlighting the growing relevance of PEFC certification across the Asia-Pacific region.

MTCC remains committed to active engagement within PEFC platforms and to contributing to the continued strengthening of credible, internationally recognised forest certification systems.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) wishes to inform that companies certified under, or in the process of obtaining, the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) may be eligible for tax deductions under the Income Tax Act 1967.

This incentive, provided by the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN), applies to audit-related expenses associated with MTCS/PEFC Chain of Custody and Forest Management certification, including ongoing maintenance and renewal, where certification is conducted by certification bodies accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM).

7 May 2026, Thursday – The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) welcomed a delegation from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) for a visit to better understand the role of a scheme owner in managing and developing a certification scheme.

The delegation was led by Ir. Ts. Azhar Hamzah, Director of the Human Factors and Road User Behavioural Centre, together with Ts. Rabihah Ilyas as Project Lead and four members of the research team.

The session was led by MTCC’s Director of Forest Management, Mr. Muhammad Zul Fayyadh bin Azizo Rahman, with the attendance of Ms. Zefi Efiliya binti Mohd Taib, Governance, Legal and Risk Management Officer.

The session provided an opportunity for knowledge sharing on the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), including MTCC’s institutional arrangement as a scheme owner, standards development process, governance structure, certification management, international endorsement under PEFC, and engagement with certification bodies and stakeholders.

Discussions also covered the operational and financial aspects of managing a certification scheme, challenges in maintaining credibility and international recognition, as well as strategies for continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement.

MTCC appreciates MIROS’s interest in learning from the MTCC’s experience in developing MTCS and looks forward to continued collaboration in promoting credible certification systems and sustainability initiatives in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) wishes to announce the postponement of the standard review and re-endorsement process for the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS).

Following PEFC's advice to National Governing Bodies to align national reviews with the upcoming international revision of the PEFC Sustainable Forest Management benchmark standard (PEFC ST 1003), the MTCS SFM standard revision and re-endorsement process will be deferred until the revised benchmark standards are officially published.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) is pleased to announce the publication of two new documents under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), both effective 1 May 2026.

MTCS PR 1001:2026 – Standard-setting Procedures (including for Forest Management Certification Standards) governs all standard-setting activities under the MTCS and supersedes MTCS ST 1001:2021.

MTCS GD 3003:2026 – Complaints Handling and Dispute Resolution Mechanism: Guide for Stakeholders supersedes MTCS GD 3003:2023 and sets out how MTCC receives, manages, and resolves complaints and disputes under the MTCS.
