Home Is the Greatest Wish
I am a Homecare Nurse.
In Malaysia, for many cancer patients, after completing hospital treatment, their greatest wish is simply to return to the comfort of their own home.
My job is to walk beside them through the final chapter of their journey.
The first time I met Mr. Lim, he was living with advanced-stage lung cancer.
When I visited his home for the first time, I noticed a family portrait hanging on the living room wall.
His wife smiled and said,
“He used to be the one taking care of all of us. Now, it’s our turn to take care of him.”
Mr. Lim simply smiled and replied,
“That’s life. Sometimes, we have to learn to accept the love that others give us.”
My role was to assess his condition, provide nursing care, manage his medications, and teach his family how to care for him so he could be as comfortable as possible.
But over time, I realized that cancer patients need much more than medical care.
They need someone to stand beside them as they face the fear of death.
One day, he looked at me and asked,
“Alex… am I running out of time?”
I didn’t give him an answer.
Instead, I said,
“None of us can know how much time we have left. But we can make every day as comfortable and meaningful as possible, together.”
After that, every time I visited, he would greet me with a smile and ask,
“Alex, have you been working hard today?”
It always touched me.
I was supposed to be the one caring for him, yet he was always concerned about everyone else.
Two months later, during my final visit, he had become very weak.
Before I left, he held my hand and said,
“Thank you for seeing more than just a patient. You saw my whole life, and you walked with me through the final part of my journey.”
At that moment, I truly understood what nursing means.
We cannot change the outcome of every illness.
But we can help people spend the final chapter of their lives with dignity, comfort, and compassion.
Because nursing is not only about extending life—
It’s about protecting the warmth of life until the very end. ❤️
