SSM Waives Late Fees to Support MBRS 2.0 Transition

As of May 27, the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) has announced a 3-month waiver on late submission fees for statutory documents filed via its new Malaysian Business Reporting System (MBRS 2.0). This applies to filings made from June 1 to September 30, 2025, easing the transition into Phase 3 of the digital system rollout.

Phase 3 Highlights:
-Mandatory online submission of audited financial statements under the Companies Act 2016
- Online rectification/court order filings and exemption requests
- Applies to documents filed up to 3 months late (after the 7-day grace period)

The MBRS 2.0 rollout (started Dec 1, 2024) replaces physical submissions entirely—supporting transparency, digital efficiency, and corporate compliance.

NEW AUDIT EXEMPTIONS BY 2027 – SAVING UP TO RM3M (USD640K) IN COMPLIANCE COSTS

The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) has introduced new audit exemption criteria for private companies, effective for financial periods starting 1 January 2025. The revised thresholds allow companies to qualify for audit exemption if they meet any two of the following criteria:

Annual revenue not exceeding RM3,000,000 (approx. USD640,000).
Total assets not exceeding RM3,000,000 (approx. USD640,000).
Not more than 30 employees.

The implementation will be phased over three years:

Phase 1 (2025-2026): Revenue ≤ RM1,000,000 (USD213,000), Assets ≤ RM1,000,000 (USD213,000), Employees ≤ 10.
Phase 2 (2026-2027): Revenue ≤ RM2,000,000 (USD426,000), Assets ≤ RM2,000,000 (USD426,000), Employees ≤ 20.
Phase 3 (2027 onwards): Revenue ≤ RM3,000,000 (USD640,000), Assets ≤ RM3,000,000 (USD640,000), Employees ≤ 30.

This initiative aims to reduce regulatory burdens for SMEs, with 51% of active companies expected to benefit by 2027.

Malaysia and EU Resume Landmark Free Trade Talks

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have announced the resumption of Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) negotiations. This marks a major step in enhancing economic ties and unlocking immense benefits across key sectors like electronics, palm oil, and green technology.

With EU investments creating over 153,000 jobs in Malaysia and trade surpassing RM206 billion in 2023, this agreement aims to foster a win-win partnership. It reflects Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable growth, aligned with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
