"Frankie lives in a six-bedroom house on the outskirts of Leeds. She is her own landlord, but doesn’t own the house. Instead she is part of a co-operative housing group: together, they have been able to buy the house and then rent it at an affordable price back to themselves as tenants.

Just a few miles away, another group has secured funding to design and build an eco-community of up to 30 households, including what is known as a common house: a shared house with a kitchen, laundry, workshops, a meeting space, guest rooms and gardens."

In the UK alone there are around 300 listed co-operative housing communities, with new ones springing up every year.

Saturday Thoughts - FOOD DESIGN

I am trained to design buildings and the training that l received has equipped me with a set of skills in design processes. These skills come in handy to adapt the processes for food designing. The thing that makes food designing a lot more fun is l can eat my mistakes or feed the cats and dogs at the farm 😁😸🐶. Nobody needs to know about it whereas a fault in building design cannot be rectified easily; therefore, l cannot be as carefree and take a risk in executing building works. It is a good thing to do at this stage of my life, less stress and more fun. In case you think l made up stories about food design 🐈😬, read the article below, it is a real discipline as part of culinary arts.

"Food design is a recent discipline that includes the process of design studies and research that generates new products related to food. This discipline is part of the industrial design and is in charge of the creation and design of food, parts of complex food products and in some way related to them.

In Food Design meet and mix different disciplines such as biology, genetics, anthropology, psychoanalysis, sociology, nutrition, research on sociability and social mediation and the history culinary systems and forms of conviviality."
