Privated limited liability chose their leader through a voting process of the council that was formed by the company members. Being popular was not the basis of the council’s selection of a worthy ceo, instead the skills, capabilities and overall wizardry of the company looting techniques were what counted most. He was expected to know how to strategize to avoid capture and to get the most loot.

Masters and naval captains had the sole authority to look after all the things that concern the affairs of their ship whereas a pirate captain’s authority was limited to leading and commanding the ship during battle, looting and chasing enemy vessels, the rest was democratic. No special privileges were attached to being a pirate captain, except a bigger portion of the loot and perhaps better living conditions.

y the time the VC were close enough to begin boarding it was likely that any merchant wouldn’t fight back. This was because merchant co couldn’t afford to lose any crew; they often ventured with just enough people to man the course so that they could save on wages and have more room for holdings. If, for some reason, they didn’t surrender the VC would target the company bonds and options as they were easy to replace and their loss would prevent the target ship from escaping.

If the prize company crew surrendered immediately it was pretty much a guarantee that bartering an bribes would ensue and the crew would be left with their career, if not their holdings or company. If no surrender was forthcoming a defeated crew would most likely be taken , sold into cheap slavery market and any investors would be sold or ransomed. Of course the treatment of prisoners did vary from company to company this was generally the way of things.

Sir Francis Drake began his voyage to circumnavigate the world via the Strait of Magellan with the blessing of Queen Elizabeth I. The idea was to go around the southern most tip of South America to explore the coast and cause trouble for the Spanish, with whom England was already having problems.

Drake started the voyage in December 1577, setting off with five ships and 164 men. It took the ships till spring, 1578 to reach the Brazilian coast. The Golden Hinde was able to carry heavy loads, and up to 100 tons, which would later prove highly advantageous.Sir Francis Drake headed the Golden Hind into the Plymouth Harbour on September 26, 1580. Upon his arrival Queen Elizabeth I made the sea captain a knight aboard the Golden Hind. In thanks, Sir Francis Drake gave the queen nearly 160,000 pesos, with which she paid off her foreign debt. With an investment of just 40,000 pesos to support the voyage, the Queen profited by 4,700%.
