The Simunjan Esplanade roof canopy has been completed, transforming the waterfront promenade into a functional and visually distinctive public space. The completed roof maintains the original folded gable form while incorporating fully constructed north-facing clerestory skylights with coloured glazing panels. These features enhance daylight pe*******on, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen the architectural identity of the building.

The large roof canopy provides continuous shade and weather protection along the promenade, creating a comfortable environment for pedestrians, recreational activities, community events, and public gatherings. The completed structure also promotes natural ventilation through the elevated roof design, improving thermal comfort in the tropical climate.

Located in Simunjan, Sarawak, the new roof over the Simunjan Esplanade aims to revitalize the existing waterfront promenade through the introduction of a contemporary roof canopy. Inspired by local elements, the design responds to the tropical climate and local context by providing a generous canopy over the esplanade and its existing structures, enhancing thermal comfort while offering protection from sun and rain. The elevated structure promotes natural ventilation and provides continuous shade for pedestrians, recreational activities, and public gatherings.

A series of broken triangular beams forms the gable roof, incorporating north-facing skylights that admit soft natural daylight into the esplanade while minimizing glare and heat gain from direct sunlight. The intervention extends the functionality of the public space, creating an inviting waterfront destination that supports community life and remains active throughout the year.
