Basal Stem Rot (BSR), primarily caused by Ganoderma boninense, remains a major threat to oil palm production. The fungus infects palms through root contact with infected woody debris left in the soil. Visible symptoms may only appear after substantial internal damage has occurred, highlighting the importance of preventive management and regular disease monitoring.

The presentation shared long term field trial findings from Lambir Estate, established in 2012, involving 4,073 oil palms across 32.29 ha. 6 treatments were evaluated, including GanoEF, other biological products and an untreated control, to assess their effectiveness in managing Ganoderma disease under commercial plantation conditions.
GanoEF, containing the endophytic fungus Hendersonia sp., demonstrated the strongest disease suppression among the evaluated treatments. The results highlighted GanoEF potential as a preventive biological treatment for reducing Ganoderma disease incidence and supporting long term oil palm health.

GanoEF can colonise internal root tissues and vascular sheaths, unlike free living fungi that mainly occupy the soil and outer root zone. This helps protect roots by limiting the establishment of Ganoderma boninense and supporting the palm natural defence responses.

The presentation emphasised that biological control alone may not provide sufficient protection when infected woody debris remains in the soil. An integrated approach is essential, combining preventive biological treatments with mechanical sanitation, including the excavation of infected palms and chipping trunk material into pieces to accelerate decomposition and reduce sources of infection.

Dr. Su highlighted that the GanoEF treatment reduced mechanical sanitation costs by approximately 55%, demonstrating the potential economic benefits of reducing Ganoderma disease incidence and the need for costly removal of infected palms.
Overall, the presentation highlighted that sustainable Ganoderma management requires a long term, integrated approach. Using GanoEF as a preventive biological treatment, together with proper field sanitation and regular disease monitoring, may help reduce disease incidence, lower management costs and support the long term productivity of oil palm plantations.
