An alternator is the "electrical heart" of a vehicle, acting as a small generator that converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy. How It Works
1. Mechanical Input: When the engine runs, the crankshaft turns the drive belt, which spins the alternator's pulley.
2. Magnetic Induction: The spinning rotor creates a moving magnetic field. As this field passes through the stationary stator coils, it pushes electrons, creating an alternating electrical current.
3. Conversion & Distribution: The rectifier changes this AC into DC. The voltage regulator then ensures this power is at the correct level before sending it to the battery for charging and to the rest of the car to power lights, radio, and other electronics. [2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12]
Common Signs of Failure
* Dim or Flickering Lights: Headlights or dashboard lights may change brightness as you accelerate or slow down.
* Warning Light: The battery-shaped light on the dashboard often indicates an alternator issue rather than just a weak battery.
* Dead Battery: If the alternator isn't charging, the battery will eventually drain completely, and the car won't start.
