Many people use the terms Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) interchangeably, but they play different yet complementary roles in delivering customer satisfaction.

It all starts with the Voice of the Customer. Customer needs and expectations are translated by the Engineering team into product specifications, drawings, standards, and requirements.

🔹 Quality Assurance (QA) focuses on the process.
QA ensures that the systems, procedures, training, and standards are in place so the product can consistently meet the engineering specifications.

🔹 Quality Control (QC) focuses on the product.
QC verifies through inspections, measurements, and testing that the actual product conforms to those specifications before reaching the customer.

Think of it this way:

Customer Requirements ➡️ Engineering Specifications ➡️ Quality Assurance Builds the Process ➡️ Quality Control Verifies the Output ➡️ Customer Satisfaction

When QA and QC work together effectively, organizations can reduce defects, improve consistency, and build customer trust through quality products and services.

Quality is not just about inspection—it is about creating a system that consistently delivers what the customer values.

In many organizations, machines are upgraded, systems are digitalized, and processes are automated…
But one important question remains:

“How do we consistently develop people?”

This is where Training Within Industry (TWI) becomes powerful.

Born during World War II to rapidly develop skilled workers, TWI is not just a training program — it is a people development system that builds strong leaders, capable supervisors, and stable operations.

TWI focuses on three essential pillars:
🔹 Job Instruction (JI) – Training people the correct way to do the job safely, correctly, and consistently.
🔹 Job Methods (JM) – Improving the way work is done by eliminating waste and increasing productivity.
🔹 Job Relations (JR) – Building strong working relationships and leading people effectively.

Many organizations struggle with:
❌ Inconsistent training
❌ High dependency on “experienced people”
❌ Quality variation
❌ Long learning curves
❌ Weak leadership at the frontline

TWI addresses these challenges by creating a culture where knowledge can be transferred systematically and continuously improved.

This is why TWI became one of the foundational influences behind the Toyota Production System (TPS) and Lean culture practiced around the world today.

Technology can support operations.
But people development sustains excellence.

Organizations that invest in developing their people will always stay ahead in the long run.

We have just recently completed 2 session of TWI training with an FDI from Taiwan operating in Penang, Malaysia.

What looks like a simple LEGO game turned into a powerful learning moment on the importance of Standardized Work. 🧱

As the team went through different rounds of building activities, one thing became very clear — without a standard, every person works differently. The result? Variation, confusion, inconsistent quality, and wasted time.

Through the hands-on simulation, the team experienced the real challenges faced in daily operations:
• Different work methods creating inconsistent results
• Miscommunication between team members
• Waiting, rework, and unnecessary motion
• Difficulty achieving stable lead time and quality

But once Standardized Work was introduced, everything changed.

The key takeaways from the session:
✅ Best known method must be clearly defined
✅ Sequence matters to create smooth flow
✅ Standard timing helps balance work and reduce bottlenecks
✅ Visual standards improve communication and teamwork
✅ Stability is the foundation before improvement (Kaizen) can happen

The LEGO demonstration reminded everyone that Standardized Work is not about restricting creativity — it is about creating consistency, reducing variation, and building a strong foundation for continuous improvement.

Simple exercise, powerful lesson.
Seeing is believing. Learning by doing creates lasting understanding.

It started with a simple game… paper planes flying across the room ✈️

Laughter, competition, a little chaos — but beneath it all, a powerful lesson unfolding.

Today, we completed another Lean TPS Awareness Training with the team at Low Seat Hoong Food Service. Through the Airplane Game and Value Stream Management session, what seemed like play quickly turned into perspective.

As the rounds progressed, something shifted.
The team began to see time — not just as seconds ticking, but as waste, delays, bottlenecks… and opportunities.

Moments of waiting became visible.
Unnecessary movements became obvious.
And most importantly, improvement ideas started coming from them.

That’s the magic of Lean — not teaching people what to fix, but helping them see what they couldn’t before.

From simulation to reality, the biggest takeaway isn’t the game…
It’s the mindset shift.

Because once you see waste, you can’t unsee it.

Not in the meeting room. Not on the slides.
Real learning begins at the Genba — where the work truly happens.

As a TPS Coach, I’ve always believed that Genba skill is the most critical skill to master to be a TPS practitioner. It’s not about telling people what to improve… it’s about seeing, feeling, and understanding the work with your own eyes.

This time, I brought my junior team along — not to teach them, but to let them discover.

We stood on our customer’s babagardening shop floor, watching closely.
We asked questions. We challenged assumptions.

From simple 5S improvements, to rethinking a one-way-in, one-way-out layout, to noticing the hidden strain in an operator’s daily movements — every small observation revealed an opportunity to reduce lead time.

No fancy tools.
Just sharp eyes, curious minds, and the courage to go and see.

Because transformation doesn’t start with big ideas.
It starts with one observation at Genba.

Some journeys feel different — this was one of them.

Standing at the Akio Morita Museum in the Chita Peninsula, I found myself reflecting on the quiet power of mentorship and legacy. Akio Morita, a visionary in his own right, was once a student of Taizo Ishida, the 3rd CEO of the Toyota Group — a reminder that greatness is often shaped long before it is seen.

From teacher to student, from philosophy to practice — the ripple of influence travels further than we imagine.

As we walked through the museum, it wasn’t just about history. It was about understanding how values, discipline, and thinking patterns are passed down, refined, and reimagined across generations.

In TPS, we often talk about learning by seeing. Today, we witnessed something deeper — learning through lineage.

Stories inspire, but Seeing is Believing.
This time, we didn’t just tell the story—we lived it.

For almost a decade, we’ve been sharing the philosophy of TPS with our management team—through workshops, discussions, and real-world applications. We spoke about its origins, its principles, and the mindset behind it.

But nothing compares to standing where it all began.

Visiting the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology with the Mega Label Team was more than just a trip—it was a full-circle moment. Walking through the birthplace of TPS, seeing the evolution of ideas, and connecting the dots between theory and reality… it made everything come alive.

You could see it in the team’s eyes—curiosity, excitement, and that spark of realization. This is what we’ve been learning. This is where it all started.

Because sometimes, the most powerful learning doesn’t come from slides or words—
it comes from experience, shared together.

Completed the 4-Days Lean TPS Level 1 training with Capsule Hotel. Inspiring the team on the TPS application for the Hospitality Industry to improve the efficiency by applying the TPS knowledge.

Looking forward to the application of Lean TPS knowledge next with VA’s Kaizen PDCAF workshop that will lead them step-by-step hand-holding into Kaizen projects.
