Loneliness is the feeling we experience when we need connection with others, but are unable to find it.
Perhaps this is a feeling that some of us are familiar with. During festive seasons, when we are not able to be with our family or friends, the feeling of being alone can become more noticeable. Loneliness is often accompanied by boredom and emptiness.
Human beings are social beings. When we live alone for a prolonged period without the companionship of others, and have no one to share our thoughts, feelings, or daily experiences with, we may begin to feel lonely. At the same time, loneliness can also arise even when we are surrounded by people, when we do not feel connected or close to those around us, or when we feel misunderstood.
Feeling lonely does not necessarily mean that something is wrong with our mental health. However, we should not underestimate the impact loneliness can have on our psychological well-being. A study conducted by The University of Hong Kong found that repeatedly thinking about how lonely we are may increase the likelihood of developing depression.
The causes of loneliness can vary from person to person. Experiences such as losing a loved one, going through a breakup, retirement, changing jobs, or moving to a new city or country where family and friends are not around can all contribute to feelings of loneliness.
If you are feeling very lonely, you might consider building new connections, opening up to family members or friends about what is on your mind, reducing comparisons with others, and taking good care of yourself and your daily life.
These approaches may not work for everyone, and it is okay if you need additional support.
