The Loch Ard Highland distillery is located in KINCARDINESHIRE on the outskirts of Cairngorms National Park.
Loch Ard is a fresh water loch lying 5km to the west of Aberfoyle and is considered to be the source of the River Forth. The name of the loch comes from aird, the Scottish Gaelic word for a promontory , headland , height , ultimately from ard meaning high.
One of the 22 lochs that make up Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park , Loch Ard is believed to be the source of the River Forth which flows from its eastern end. Famous Scottish author and poet, Sir Walter Scott , name checked the loch in his 1917 novel Rob Roy describing it as ' an enchanting sheet of water. On the loch's southern shores lie the ruins of a castle built by noblemand Murdoch Stewart , Duke of Albany , executed by James I for treason in 1425.
The Queen Elizabeth Forest Park encompasses Loch Ard and the surrounding forest. Villages of Kinlochard, and Milton lie on its shores. The village of Aberfoyle lies 2 miles to its east, with the summit of Craigmore begin while the mountain of Ben Lomond stis to its west. The northern shores of Loch Ard are dominated by the mountain ridge of the 616-metre (2,021ft) tall Being an Fhogharaidh.
The Highland region is by far Scotland's largest , but is only responsible for a quarter of the country's malt whisky production. Speyside actually falls within the borders of the Highland region, but despite its small size it takes the lion's share, being responsible for two-thirds of all Scotch malt whisky.
