In many family disputes, society is often too quick to label a child as “derhaka” simply because there is disagreement, distance, legal conflict, or resistance.

But true disobedience toward parents is far deeper than merely defending one’s rights, setting boundaries, or refusing unfair treatment.

There is an important distinction between:
• cruelty and self-protection
• hatred and disagreement
• abandonment and emotional exhaustion
• disrespect and standing firm during conflict

A child does not automatically become derhaka for:

- seeking legal clarity,
- protecting their spouse or children,
- defending a home,
- refusing manipulation,
- or distancing themselves from toxic behaviour.

At the same time, children must also be careful not to let pain turn into revenge, arrogance, humiliation, or cruelty toward parents.

Respect should remain in speech and conduct, even during conflict.

Sometimes the greatest challenge in family disputes is not “winning,” but ensuring that hardship does not slowly poison the heart.

Islam teaches justice, compassion, boundaries, and responsibility — not blind submission to oppression from either side.

Not every broken family relationship has a villain and a saint.

Sometimes it is simply generations of pain, ego, misunderstanding, control, pride, and unresolved wounds colliding together.

The real victory is when a person can protect themselves without losing their humanity in the process.
