Arkitek M E L

Arkitek M E L We produce works which are good with lasting architectural merits whilst delivering affordable design solutions which will also meet future challenges.

Mel Soong studied architecture at the University of New South Wales and graduated in October 1989. He joined Peddle Thorp Architects even prior to his graduation and worked at the World Square project site in downtown Sydney until his return to Kuala Lumpur in January 1990. He set up ARKITEK M E L, a sole proprietorship practice in September 1994 and has had acquired and participated in a wide ran

ge of commissions, culminating in extensive collaboration even to-date with the multinational hypermarket player, Carrefour. Mel’s recent involvement with numerous outreach programmes has also taken his studio to the city state of Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal and right through to the Indian sub-continent, all of which provides invaluable experience in Tibetan Buddhist architecture, way of life and spirituality. Mel intentionally maintains the practice on a small scale with the belief of personal involvement at all levels of a project as a service to the client. This core value still continues to form the basis of ARKITEK M E L’s philosophy.

From the post-war modernist architecture centred within Ueno Park, I took a trip back in time at Ueno Sakuragi Atari (which lies only a short walk from both the Ueno and Nippori Stations) to experience the unique shopping and lunching opportunity within Tokyo’s old downtown (下町/Sh*tamachi) embellished with picture-perfect old world architectural charm of yesteryear, 1938 to be exact. Numerous establishments were saved from development here and duly re-purposed within the old Yanaka neighbourhood to inject new life which manifests in the form of:
• Kayaba Bakery (of the Kayaba Coffee fame) offers freshly-baked breads to be selected from an array of crispy, hard-crusted bread as well as soft, Japanese-style breads like anpan (a fluffy roll filled with sweet red bean paste) and cream-filled sweet baked goods;
• OshiOlive specialises in gourmet salts and olive oils with a cafe shop front to place order for original drinks such as the Amazake Blossom Sakura or even an olive latte; and
• Yanaka Beer Hall affords original craft beers.
As Yanaka is known as a hangout for artists it would be a missed opportunity not to drop-by the creative house, SCAI The Bathhouse, a contemporary art gallery transformed from a former bathhouse with over 200 years of history! Of course the expedition would not have been complete without prayers offered at various shrines located within the sacred grounds of Kaneiji, Tahoin and Tennoji Temples as well as Yanaka Reien (literally "Yanaka Spirit Park").

Monday blue sets in (exactly a year and a week ago) when you are unable to explore the only body of work created by the master architect Le Corbusier in Japan (due to weekly on premise maintenance work). The National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) located within Ueno Park, Tokyo demonstrates Le Corb’s “Five Points for a New Architecture” which he had expounded in 1926 when he incorporated construction materials and methods whilst implementing design concepts in order to create structures to enhance the wellbeing of inhabitants and to accommodate their lifestyle. The declaration of five basic tenets that he had conceived made up the new architecture which consisted of:
1. Pilotis, 2. Rooftop Garden, 3. Free Floor Plan (Flat Surface), 4. Horizontal Oblong Windows and 5. Free Facade.
Three apprentices of Le Corbusier, Kunio Maekawa, Junzo Sakakura and Takamasa Yoshizaka also collaborated with the maestro to design and realised the building which was officiated in 1959. The premise has closed since 19 Oct 2020 and shall remain shut until the museum facilities upgrade works are completed when NMWA is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2022.

For the first posting to greet 2021, let's welcome a young lad's narrative and venture to Pittwater waterway, a semi-matured tide dominated drowned valley estuary of the Northern Beaches some 30 kms north of metropolitan Sydney. Compared to years past, 2020 has been different and challenging in all aspects. The travelling spirit cannot be subdued too long and the chance to explore and re-discover shall kick start soon hopefully. What better way to aspire than to reminisce even though this journey is one undertaken almost thirty two years ago. Keep searching for creative ways to relax and unwind and most of all, keep well + stay safe always ...

Definitely no Monday blue during the last working week of 2020.
Time really flew past this round and the occasion almost slipped past our thoughts.
This studio remembers happily and looks ahead to reaching our third decade of practice.

A blast from the past exactly thirty two ( yes, 32 !!!) summers ago today when work mates from the Banquet Department of The Regent Sydney (now Four Seasons Hotel) were treated to an early X'mas harbour cruise around Sydney Harbour. Australia had commemorated their bicentennial in 1988 and I remember enrolled for the final year of my undergraduate programme at the School of Architecture in University of New South Wales. Enjoyed the amazing afternoon of sun, surf and plenty of hair then, filled with festivities, merry holiday making and sheer fun, hohoho ...

Not being aware of a gazetted public holiday last Friday meant business-as-usual in the studio office with the annual spring cleaning concluded when coordinator Fiqah from PAM Resource Centre collected the second bundle of periodicals and reference books. Several more will be despatched to the Sungai Long campus with each of the student in the Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design to receive a copy when we return to kick start Studio Six in the new trimester on 19 Jan 2021. The exercise had turned out also to be a personal nostalgic expedition of vetting materials to be deployed which ranged from hand drawn sketches, site layout, farewell card right through to acrylic painted interpretation of architectural theories. Some works were created more than thirty years !

Stumbled upon this series of hand drawn sketches which demonstrated to the client the numerous possibilities of salvaging and enhancing his array of period collectibles acquired from his expeditions abroad and locally. The restoration exercise which had kick-started way back in 1991 emphasised on evaluating every single piece through the merit of its attractiveness, construction and how it was to be put together to create not only a beautiful but also a highly functional object d’art.
Recall and concur with the adage whereby “The patina of certain items and places made me think about how people used to live, what their stories were. How were these things made? What were they meant to be used for? How did things use to be done? That’s why in my design work, it’s never just about the material, but also how it references a period of the past, how it alludes to a tradition of craftsmanship."
