KUALA LUMPUR: The application for the extension of temporary work permit for foreign workers (PLKS) under the rehiring programme will be opened on Monday (Dec 20), says the Immigration Department.
Its director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the programme started in 2016 with the aim of giving opportunities for undocumented immigrants working in Malaysia, for a maximum of five years, to cater to manpower needs in permitted sectors.
"As of Nov 30, the department recorded 185,577 active PLKS under the programme.
"PLKS, which is valid for five years, will end in phases starting this year until 2024," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 15).
To avoid shortage of manpower especially in 3D (dirty, difficult, dangerous) sectors, Khairul Dzaimee said the government has agreed on Nov 19 that the PLKS period under the programme is extended yearly for a maximum of five years, depending on needs.
"In connection with this matter, the application for PLKS extension under the programme will be opened starting Monday," he said.
Six main items that need the attention of employers, who hired workers under the programme are both employers and workers do not violate requirement for the passes; workers that have been blacklisted cannot apply for extension; workers cannot change employers or sectors except through a special approval of the Home Ministry; only employers and valid representatives of employers can apply for the extension; PLKS extension will only be allowed online through ePLKS or MyEG, and consideration for PLKS extension depends on enforcement of foreign worker employment procedures.
Khairul Dzaimee urged all employers to take the opportunity to renew the PLKS of their workers.
