A personal experience on being trained and coached, from a trainer, coach and facilitator point of view.
I got back into golf about a month ago after almost 15 years leaving it. I had issues with my swing despite working on it. Youtube videos, friends and trial and error did not help.
I realised I needed help. I went to see a pro. Within 15 minutes, he corrected my swing. After 2 days, I went back to the range. I lost it. Had to slowly practise to get at it again.
Here are the lessons I learnt.
1. If there is a real need for improvements, a traner and a coach is the best way to go. Why? Because each of us is unique and they are able to work with that uniqueness.
2. There is a need to get work done after the training and coaching to really own those improvements. Coaches shows possibilities, we work to own it.
3. Improvements take time. Aim to get a little better each time. Give ourselves some credit for the work and celebrate the small wins.
4. Training and coaching is not a one off thing. Keep working with the same trainer and coach multiple times. Continuous training and coaching helps break bad habits and nurture new ones.
5. Trainers and coaches help with motivating us to keep improving. They are also honest in giving feedback. Friends may patronise us, coaches don't.
If there is a REAL need for improvements, coaching and training is the way to go.
We all have that pot of gold that we aim for at the end of the rainbow. What would you do to get to yours?
