β€œ...I have a staff who is very quiet. Let's call her Jane. Sometimes, I don't even know what she does. But she seems busy all the time.

Then Jane went on long leave. She briefed the replacement staff (let's call her Mary) before she went. I thought that was that. But soon I noticed that Mary was very stressed and worked till late. Mary even roped in Sue to help. Issue after issue popped up.

Did Jane not do a proper handover? I demanded.

Both of them looked at me. No! 2 people were having a tough time filling in for Jane. When she was around, everything was taken care of. Quietly. She didn't shout it out like a lot of people. She is like most hardworking people who think their work will speak for themselves. That it is beneath them to disturb the boss and trumpet their contribution.

Result? Companies end up taking them for granted....”

In the real world, even the best bosses don't have 20/20 vision. Sometimes the staff has to resign before the company realises the staff's value. Too late. Do great stuff but let people know, once in awhile.

Making employees feel valued and APPRECIATED is the best thing you can do every day. In today's world where everything moves at 100 km /hr in a company, it is easy to forget to stop and do this. Even the slowest employee will work to the best of their ability if they know their efforts are being appreciated.
