Management has long been associated with five basic functions: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. These default dimensions seem sufficient when an organization pursues unchanging fixed targets in a stable landscape. But take away the stability of the landscape, and one needs to start thinking about the fluidity of the target. This is what is happening today. To be effective and relevant today, managers must move away from the friendly confines of these five tasks and help organizations meet todayโ€™s challenges. Managers must evolve. From being directive to instructive, restrictive to expansive, exclusive to inclusive, repetitive to innovative, problem solving to challenging, and being an employer to becoming an entrepreneur.

We want managers to be infused once again with human values, allowing these values to guide them: to be people who love to learn and love to teach, who liberate and innovate, who include others in the process of thinking imaginatively, and who challenge everyone around them to create a better business and a better world. Branding is all about Identity. Identifying a product, company, person with a set of values which then tells the world who and what we are. Brands are strong when the customers it is supposed to communicate with trust and are loyal to it. For this to happen, the brand experiences the customer has come to expect must consistently and reliably be shared. Proponents of branding believe that branding short circuits a purchaserโ€™s buying process. If all forms of purchasing are a form of problem solving, then a strong brand hastens the resolution of the shopperโ€™s buying problems. There is already an increasing acknowledgement that brands are as tangible an asset as those normally considered so in accounting conventions. It pays to develop strong brands.

Recently I started reading a book about branding in Asia and the one of the comparisons made by the writer between the Asian business and ones in the West was the fact that the Asian business entrepreneur does not see branding efforts as investments but rather as โ€œcostโ€ items with promised returns far into the future. So the Asian business person tends to stinge on branding activities. One other point made was the brand owner could do so much more in promoting their own brand โ€“ it costs less and has higher authenticity. The passion the owner has towards their brand/product would be more evident. The writer of the book Iโ€™m reading attributed this behaviour to the fact that Asians are shy and prefer to remain low key.

Given the fast moving changes sweeping the business world, can we afford to stick to the ways of old, ways that have proven their worth (in the pastโ€ฆ) but which may be anachronistic or downright outdated to meet the challenges posed by the world today? Is there still a place for Asian business conservatism? Could this explain the old belief that an Asian business (particular the family variety) will not last beyond the third generation? What do you think?

Spending time with yourself is not a bad thing. Relying on yourself to make decisions is not negative practice either. However, spending every waking moment on your business without time for anything else is definitely not encouraged. Relentlessly pursuit of business goals can result in problems that entrepreneurs tend to ignore until itโ€™s too late.

Instructing your team to practice holding difficult but unavoidable conversations at work is challenging. As leaders, we need to lead by example. Having to have difficult conversations is a fact of life. A difficult conversation concerns an area of importance, usually the imparting of unpleasant information or news, that must be had between individuals in order that problems are solved or prevented. This is difficult anywhere, whether at home where such conversations tend to be private or at the workplace, where conversation topics center on performance feedback or the sharing of final decisions affecting the individual who is told. Not surprisingly, these conversations tend to invoke a flurry of emotions which oftentimes get in the way of effectively conveying the key message.

It is usually agreed that the topics forming such conversations are important. However, the issue is always the act of conveying the message in a way that is accepted by the recipient. The process of such communication is deemed difficult because of the fear that the recipient may not take it well.
A typical situation is where the communicator is unsure of what exactly to say, how to balance facts with emotions and how to handle things โ€œcorrectlyโ€ to meet the recipientโ€™s reaction.

Managers will likely face situations where such conversations have to be initiated by them and hopefully be carried to an amiable conclusion. Like all forms of communication, it involves a set of skills that can be learned. Itโ€™s about understanding the process involved, what one needs to prepare and employing the rules of good communication to be able to initiate, carry on and control such conversations using the right volume, pitch and tone. Like all skills, once learned and acquired, it becomes better with practice.

Work-related difficult conversations include, among other things, giving feedback on a workerโ€™s performance or announcing a retrenchment exercise and letting people go. Some believe that by being โ€œhonestโ€ in oneโ€™s conversation, i.e. telling it as it is in a gentler, more empathetic way, is the key. Of course, such a humanistic approach is always better than one which sounds robotic and officious. However, is it enough just being โ€œhonestโ€? The effect of such conversations is to have the recipient understand and accept whatever was discussed and shared by the communicator. In light of this, just sharing it openly may be insufficient. The need for structure, observation and the ability to respond quickly to reactions are equally important.

When handled well, these conversations not only convey key messages and resolve conflicts effectively, but it can also result in less emotional reactions from those who are let go. It creates the opportunity to improve performance, prevent repetitive mistakes and leaving on a good note.

Remember, problems will not just disappear. They have to be addressed.

Working from home is the new โ€˜๐๐€๐๐ƒ๐„๐Œ๐ˆ๐‚โ€™ alongside COVID-19. There is also the question about the need to keep learning new skills while working from home. This leads us to examine if the skills are really what we need or are they something we just like learning out of interest.

If we have multiple needs or interests, we first have to determine the priorities, given the scarcity of time and funds. The guide we use to prioritize could include the effectiveness of the skills needed to plug a current gap or solve an existing problem. We then perform a simple self-assessment of whether we have the prerequisites to embark on the course or learning, the availability of time the course or courses require and the funds needed. Not all skills acquisition activities require a lot of time or money.

Talent implies an innate ability to perform something, like as if the individual was born with that gift. Skills are learned and nurtured and with practice, one becomes skillful performing it.

Can skills somewhat lead to talent? While interest and passion in acquiring skills result in proficiency, when all that synchronizes with attitudes that promote escalation to excellence, one tends to use the term โ€œTalentโ€ to describe the observation of such an individual.
