Poondu commonly known in English as Garlic is an important medicinal herb that is readily available
everywhere. Garlic, is a species in the onion family Alliaceae.Its botanical name is Allium sativum
L.Garlic has been so extensively domesticated over so many thousands of years .It has a
characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.A bulb of
garlic, the most commonly used part of the plant, is divided into numerous fleshy sections called
cloves. Garlic contains a chemical called Allicin, which has already proved to have numerous health

Medicinal Properties of Garlic
Garlic contains Allicin, which has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.
Garlic has been used as both food and medicine in many cultures for
thousands of years. Sanskrit medical texts from two thousand years ago
detail garlic’s medical uses. Ancient physicians used garlic for a diverse
assortment of aliments including arthritis, intestinal worms, and ear
infections, help clear away athlete’s foot, eczema, psoriasis, ringworm and other fungal skin
infections.

1.Garlic lowers blood pressure and Cholesterol .
2.Helps to regulate blood sugar.
3.It helps to prevent cancer, especially of the digestive system.
4.Garlic has anti-fungal properties
5.Garlic has anti-oxidant properties and is a source of selenium.

7.It is used as an expectorant for coughs and croup.
8.Garlic is used as a treatment for intestinal worms and other intestinal parasites.
9.Garlic cloves are used as a remedy for infections .
10.As a natural blood thinner, which can help prevent plaque build-up in the arteries.
