What do we know about microplastics? Is there all there is to understand?

With microplastics now found in almost anywhere, the challenge really isn’t just reducing plastic - in fact that has ran its course of irreversible damage to our environment.

So then what can we do? Green technologies focused on fixing plastic that escape into our open environment may just be the topic we should all discuss about.

ASTM D6954 shows how materials behave under controlled conditions and helps us understand degradation pathways.

Breaking down plastic is more complicated than you think. What tiers are there when it comes to testing these break down in our fragile open environment?

Have a read and let us know what you think.

What is ASTM D6954?

No, not a certification, approval, or even a test but rather - a test guideline.

Not all biodegradable claims are equal. In our two part series, we break down what you should know and understand when you see these standards being quoted.

Even with the best recycling systems, some plastic will always escape into nature.

Once there, it can persist for decades as microplastics (or longer!), especially in the ocean. This has led to growing concern, and even calls to ban plastic entirely.

But the bigger question is:
What if plastic could safely biodegrade if it escapes into our open environment?

A research carried by various independent labs in 2020 has the answers to that!

Certified” doesn’t mean anything… unless you know what was tested.

When it comes to oxo-biodegradable (d2w) plastics, you’ll often hear about ISO and ASTM standards.

But what do they actually measure? They don’t “approve” plastics.

They create the scientific methods used to test them.

For oxo-biodegradable plastics, standards like ASTM D6954 guide laboratories through oxidative degradation, biodegradation, and eco-toxicity testing.

Many of you have used or seen our bags being equipped for so many clean-ups around Malaysia and have heard of its oxo-biodegradable properties - but at the end of it all, what actually happens to these plastics? 🍃🍂

Why is d2w plastics a better alternative than what we have now? ♻

Plastic pollution is a systems failure. 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, and most of it starts on land.

While reduction and recycling are critical, plastic remains essential in food safety, healthcare and logistics. (Our previous content on banning plastics dives deeper into this.)

The realistic question is:
How do we reduce environmental harm when plastic escapes?

Material treatment technologies — like d2w (oxo-biodegradable additives) — are designed to help plastics degrade if left in open environments.

No single solution solves plastic pollution.
But responsible innovation is part of the transition.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch🗑️
This marine pollution is an irreversible act from human’s damaging littering habits and it is unfortunately, not the only massive floating garbage patch around. It is measured to be approximately 3 times the size of France. Imagine that!

If you’ve swiped and read through – here’s what we hope you’ve learnt from us:
d2w’s controlled life plastics can play a significant role in ensuring that plastics produced in this day and time are made to biodegrade completely. Without leaving any traces of microplastics, this rids our ocean of detrimental plastic pollutions. The future of plastics is those that do not contribute more to the current issue.

With plastics that conveniently biodegrade on land and sea, the future of plastic pollution can be a whole lot more promising! 🙌

Malaysia is a maritime nation where our rivers flow into some of the busiest seas in the world. 🚢

But in a global view... 60% of the ocean lies beyond national borders which means that once plastic drifts from our land into international waters, accountability becomes quite the complex issue.

8 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean annually. 🌊
Up to 80% comes from land-based waste. 🗑️

Better waste management on land isn’t just local policy. It’s global ocean protection. Catch our next post for this 2-part series soon.
