Malaysia is getting tougher on littering. 🚮

But enforcement is only one part of the bigger picture. The real question is whether these measures will actually change our littering habits - and make a lasting difference. 👀

Swipe through for what has changed, what the numbers show so far, and what we still don’t know.

As we approach the annual clean-up month: here's some throw back content we've made to highlight the importance of cleaning up and how d2w plays a part in the long-term solution of plastic pollution - from production to it's end of life.

Litter travels and litter kills - and this is why it is important for us to clean-up wherever we see litter not in trash bins.

The UN Plastic Treaty could become the world's first legally binding agreement on plastic pollution, but negotiations aren't simple.

Nearly 180 countries agree that plastic pollution is a problem - where they differ is how to solve it.

Should the focus be on reducing plastic production? Or should it be on improving waste management, recycling and innovation?

The discussions are still ongoing and whatever is agreed could shape the future of plastics around the world.

A plastic bag dropped in Kuala Lumpur could eventually become a problem in the Pacific Ocean. Our team has picked up many plastics pieces from neighbouring and 'not so neighbouring' countries, over the decade.

Most ocean plastic starts on land. It travels through drains, rivers and coastlines before entering powerful ocean currents that move waste across borders.

The challenge is that pollution doesn't respect national boundaries.

Once plastic reaches international waters, responsibility becomes far less clear.

What do we know about microplastics? Is there all there is to understand?

With microplastics now found in almost anywhere, the challenge really isn’t just reducing plastic - in fact that has ran its course of irreversible damage to our environment.

So then what can we do? Green technologies focused on fixing plastic that escape into our open environment may just be the topic we should all discuss about.

ASTM D6954 shows how materials behave under controlled conditions and helps us understand degradation pathways.

Breaking down plastic is more complicated than you think. What tiers are there when it comes to testing these break down in our fragile open environment?

Have a read and let us know what you think.

What is ASTM D6954?

No, not a certification, approval, or even a test but rather - a test guideline.

Not all biodegradable claims are equal. In our two part series, we break down what you should know and understand when you see these standards being quoted.

Even with the best recycling systems, some plastic will always escape into nature.

Once there, it can persist for decades as microplastics (or longer!), especially in the ocean. This has led to growing concern, and even calls to ban plastic entirely.

But the bigger question is:
What if plastic could safely biodegrade if it escapes into our open environment?

A research carried by various independent labs in 2020 has the answers to that!

Certified” doesn’t mean anything… unless you know what was tested.

When it comes to oxo-biodegradable (d2w) plastics, you’ll often hear about ISO and ASTM standards.

But what do they actually measure? They don’t “approve” plastics.

They create the scientific methods used to test them.

For oxo-biodegradable plastics, standards like ASTM D6954 guide laboratories through oxidative degradation, biodegradation, and eco-toxicity testing.
