MISCONCEPTION ON SUCCESSION PLANNING
By Sham Afzan

There is misconception among some SME owners on succession planning. They think it only applies to family businesses or only matters when the founder plans to retire. That is a misconception.

Succession planning is not about inheritance. It is about leadership continuity. If the owner, CEO or key manager suddenly steps away, can the business continue operating without disruption? For SMEs, this is a serious risk management issue.

Real succession planning starts with identifying critical roles that drive the strategic decisions. It involves assessing and developing internal talents, transferring knowledge into proper systems, planning a structured ongoing succession and documenting clear authority and responsibilities.

It also requires engaging key stakeholders and ensuring financial readiness, including valuation and funding planning; so the succession can be appropriately.

Succession is not a future problem. It is a strategic responsibility today.

ADDING ‘ESSENTIAL SPICES’ INTO YOUR RESUME
By Sham Afzan, ABA Malaysia

I’m sharing again my post on this topic published in 2021. It’s based on our initial assessment on most of resumes received by ABA Malaysia’s clients.

Most applicants tend to write down only brief info about their work experience, which would give a shallow perspective of their capabilities.

They normally write..
1) Name of company.
2) Years working with the company.
3) Their position
4) Brief info on their tasks/job scope.

Not interesting. Too common. Not unique.
Most tend to copy what most people in their position do.

If you have your children/friends/niece/nephew looking for jobs now, please share this.

What they can do to ‘add some essential spices’ into their resume is by adding a few lines such as..
1) Explain more about the business complexity in the business organisation and/or industry that they been attached to, so the interviewer understand and appreciate the difficulties of the industry.

2) Explain more on what specific tasks/assignments/projects that they had accomplished during their employment with the organisation.

3) Explain more on how they can add value or help to solve specific problems in the new company, based on their experience, knowledge and skills that required and may become asset to the new company.

You may have certain years of working experience. But a bigger question is how best your experience can help the company to move forward.

Throughout our experience interviewing and assessing some employees of our clients, specifically those in critical positions, their years of experience are not enough to perform as what been expected by the employers.

Probably they passed the interview due to the fact that (besides their ‘strong cable factor’)…
1) they able to ‘sell themselves’ to interviewer with their fluent communication skills and/or

2) the interviewer unable to detect what are the real skills or level of knowledge required in his/her organisation due to interviewer’s lack of knowledge in specific areas eg financial or technical knowledge.

Even if they passed the interview, and yet if they fail to adapt and lack of effort to improve themselves, these new employees will be another disposable items for the company. Especially during this pandemic crisis.
