On-board wastewater treatment systems are not as common on houseboats as one would think.

During 2024 Edelstahl Bau, the manufacturer of the Pangolin Houseboat, approached Urban Green Sustainability Consultants with the opportunity to provide a solution to the challenge of treating black- and grey water on board the Pangolin Houseboat.

For Pangolin Photo Safaries it was non-negotiable that the Pangolin Houseboat be totally off-grid and environmentally sustainable with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

With the constraints of weight and space on the Pangolin Houseboat, Edelstahl Bau and Urban Green Sustainability Consultants designed four custom-made BioTECH wastewater treatment systems that were installed in the hull of the Pangolin Houseboat.

Having a wastewater treatment system installed in service ducts literally one meter away from the guests' rooms necessitated innovative solutions to noise and emissions.

After seven months of successful operation on board the Pangolin Houseboat, the four BioTECH wastewater treatment systems were serviced and prepared for the next tourism season starting mid-March.

GREYWATER RECYCLING & REUSE

Greywater recycling is the process of treating and reusing wastewater from sources like showers, baths, and sinks for non-potable purposes like toilet flushing or irrigation. This practice reduces reliance on mains water supplies and minimizes wastewater discharge to treatment plants, offering environmental and economic benefits.

What is Greywater?

Greywater is wastewater that does not contain human waste (like toilet wastewater) or food waste. Common sources include: showers and baths, bathroom basin, and washing machines
How Greywater Recycling Works:

1. Collection:
Greywater is collected separately from blackwater (sewage) through a separate plumbing system.
2. Filtration:
The collected greywater is passed through a filtration system to remove debris, sediment, and other solids.
3. Treatment:
Depending on the system, greywater may undergo further treatment, which can include:
Biological Treatment: Using bacteria to break down organic matter.
