And so after many years the process of digital scanning of the 300 personal diaries
covering the period 1892 to 1952 has started. It was a long journey to get to this stage. In due time credit and a word of appreciation will be given to all involve and the two companies that donated state of the art scanning equipment.
Some information on the diaries. The late Mrs Helena Du Toit during their stay at Kolmanskuppe always wanted to write a book on the history and lots of people staying at Kolmans at the time donated diaries. In total 150 diaries and some dating back to 1892.On the oxwagon transport history of Namibia and the Northen Cape a total of 146 diaries was collected, some from her own family from her Father,s side who was one of the pioneers in the transport history of Namibia..
For us is a journey back into history. Once all scanning is done, the next step will be to translate about 230 diaries as they all written in German and many in the old German writing style which make it extremely difficult to read and translate. All the diaries is currently in a personal archive in Canada with a very good friend of Kolmans Studios and who keep this archive up and running at own cost. In total this archive stores around 9500 diaries from people that used to live in Africa from the late 1700,s to recently.

To answer some inquiries on the type of scanner we use. It is a product in beta phase and it is on "loan" . The scanner was actually designed around very interesting software with its origin in France and currently under development in Japan. Its main function is to be used in the stacking of rip raps and positioning of Dolosse in harbour walls. The truck will drive under the scanner and the soft ware will design the best mosaic pattern where the crane will automatically place them tight fit.
The scanner we test is in A3 size with 3 external handheld probes that also plug in. A5, A4 and A3. The reason for the additional held held probes is that old scripts is extremely sensitive to touch and one can fully open pages. The software will aligh the various scans automatically.
So far we find that even if two A5 scans of a A4 page is offset with a paragraph of around 50 to 150 words, it will close to 100% align the page and one really need to zoom in at around 400 % to see a mismatch is it is there. In short amazing. We awaiting marketing material from the manufacturing company as all is under Beta and we cannot release material on our own.
No detail available as to when this will be commercially available and also no price. But it should be on release some time in late 2022 or early 2023. Price would depend on all accessories and indication was given that it would sell for around U$ 4000 in basic configuration. This scanner opens a new world in archiving.
If this was available a year earlier, we would have first finish the scanning of all before shipping the whole archive to Canada. But well, things happen for a reason they say.

I hear often people say that the D707 is the road to take in the South of Namibia. Been there, done it(actually all gravel roads in Namibia are jewels in their own when it come to photography and geology, some just take longer to find the jewels.). But when I really want to play, the C13/ C14(six pack road) is still king. It is one of those roads where you can either do the rum run, or else, choose to be on the 240 km stretch between Aus and Maltahohe for as long as you want, not miss a pit stop at Hellmeringhausen--just be warned,it can add a day or two to your journey. Reason you ask, very easy. There is just soooo much to see. Here a photo of our famous Champagne bottle at Tiras.(btw,no fancy camera, just a very 20 year old 2 mp compact camera-my site camera and no time to unpack the photographic skills,i was in work mode, hehehehehehehe).Still one day I,w take the 4x5 or 8x10 on this road. Oi, Oi,the fun we gonna have. !!!!!!!

Scouting photo,s.These photo,s was not taken with art in mind, but rather to show the location potential of Kolmans and how it vary. Not only is interior work affected by day light(what time of the day) but also seasonal as the angle that light enters the rooms can affect also colors and availability to compose for specific work, specially fashion photography. All these photo,s is straight from the camera with only slight d-lighting adjustments,no aggressive editing,to show the real image captured instead of a full edited version.
