Auditing Exam Tips for The Day.
1. Be practical. You need to think outside the box. Everybody can define an internal control system. What gives you the marks is the ability to DEVISE a set of internal controls which suits a given situation. Now how do we do that? First ask yourself what you desire to achieve through the internal controls. List the intended objectives. Now think of the steps that may be taken to meet the intended objectives WITHOUT DERAILING THE OPERATIONS OF THE ORGANISATION!!!
Where you are required to give the steps to be taken in an audit, you need to establish the objectives in any given scenario. Only then can you come up with the appropriate steps to achieve these objectives. For instance in auditing stocks, the objective is to confirm that the value RECORDED is the accurate VALUATION of EXISTENT stocks. Steps to be taken then would be first to acquire the RECORDS, then IDENTIFY ALL STOCK SITES AND THE EXISTENT STOCKS THEREIN, #3 would be to carry out a valuation of the EXISTENT STOCKS. Now hold on right there, we NEED TO BE PRACTICAL REMEMBER!!Can we carry out a valuation of all the company's stocks during the limited time we have for the audit? DEFINITELY NO!! So what do we do achieve the objective set out? We select samples!! Apply sampling techniques which are appropriate to the type of stock being audited.
