Namibia Institute of Environmental Health research - NIEHR PTY The institute agenda is intended to inform the implementation of effective health intervention programmes in different community settings.

The institute engages in environmental health related discipline research covering aspects of environmental pollution, epidemiology, exposure sciences, occupational health and safety. The institute primary objective is to provide evidence for both public health and environmental health practice and healthy public policy formulation, so as to support the government’s response to communicable and no

n-communicable disease threats. Moreover, the institute runs health promotion and education programmes in the area of waste management, occupational Health and food safety so as to promote community health and compliance with public health related legislation in business communities. The institute undertakes multi-disciplinary research focused on investigating environmental related pollution and associated health risks, the impact of climate change on diseases trends, country burden of diseases attributed to environmental related exposure and understanding the community awareness on different preventive programmes aimed at health protection so as to inform health promotion and education interventions in different community settings. The institute conduct research to provide evidence to inform public health policy formulation as well as health promotion and education programmes targeting community health problems. The institute also provides vital professional and research training for graduate students. Vision: To be a national and regional centre of excellence for Research and training in the field of Environmental Health related disciplines. Mission:

 To provide current and relevant evidence that support government’s response to non-communicable and communicable disease threats locally and aboard.

 To Provide realistic solutions to health and environmental issues taking the best technological advances into consideration to improve community health and hence quality of life for all. Values:

 Conducting research for new insights and innovative solutions to address population health related problems.

 Conducting need based regular courses of high quality covering all aspects of Environmental Health related disciplines.

 Providing support and consultancy services to small business communities on public health legislation to ensure compliance and population health protection.

 Designing and implementing need based awareness training courses for

professionals and business owners.

 Informing, educating, and empowering communities about health issues.

 Evaluation of effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of preventive

programmes targeting behaviour change (Anti-tobacco programs, hygiene

related awareness etc.).

 Playing a leadership role in the field of environmental health through research and evidence based policy advocacy. Our specific programmes/ core functions are:

- Setting up programmes for continual improvement for various small and

medium enterprises (Business Hygiene and Safety compliance Support

Programme (BHASCSP) and E-SHEQ SYSTEM for EHS.
