8th November, 2023................................................................
It was a wonderful field trip for us at Soilless Farm Lab to explore the onion farm alongside members from HortiNigeria

Today, I learnt that Onion can be planted in the southwest and not only in the North. The 'premiere' variety of onion is favorable in the south and does well as seen in the video attachment.

With correct spacing, water and nutrient requirements and good agricultural practices, you can successfully grow your onion and sell all year round.

Do you intend going into this business?
Ask me more about it. Am open for consultation.

The goal remains: bringing about food security and sustainability. ...............................................................

Farmers are the most patient individual...............................................
How it started:

August 2021, I was posted to Ishiagu, Ebonyi State to observe my one year National Youth Service Corps program at Federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu (FCAI), Ebonyi State. The most prominent market in my community is the Eke Market being observed every 5days interval.

I was on a stroll this particular day when I came across a woman selling fruits at the market. As a retailer, she just came back from Onitsha with bundles of banana laid on the ground. With much curiousity, I became drawn to two particular banana bundles of the same variety so big and heavy with many fingers. I've never seen such before.

I drew closer to the woman, exchange courtesy and started discussing about the banana. She had gotten the banana from her local farmers who supplies her at Onitsha.
Madam, how can I get the suckers of this banana? I asked.
Let me call my supplier if you can get it she replied.
She pulled out her phone to make enquiry.
I will pay a thousand naira for one sucker she replied me.
Alright!

Since then I kept reminding the woman whenever I pass through the market, I got her contact to keep in touch with her.
Eventually, after a month thereabout, I was able to get my banana sucker. This time was December period year 2021.
I've already planned coming home that December and I will carry the sucker along.

December 2021, I planted this sucker and by January 5th I travelled back to Ishiagu, Ebonyi State to continue my service year. I kept calling my sister constantly to know how It's doing. She will say it's doing fine. Along the line, the banana spread wings with many leaves blocking the ray of light from penetrating into the room because I planted it near water source close to the bathroom.
She trimmed all the leaves which unfortunately led to the death of my precious banana.

It died totally then another sucker began to bud from underneath after some time. My hope came alive. Lo and behold, it was that sucker that gave rise to the banana I harvested three days ago, 3rd of September 2023. ..........................................................
If you will enjoy agriculture, then you need to be very patient and optimistic. Agriculture is capital tied down. It takes time before having your return on investment.
My patience eventually paid me. I now have little suckers replacing the one I just harvested.

Agric pays.

I had an unforgettable experience last week. The kind of exposure I got in the field of agribusiness management can't be quantified.

Meeting with many CEO's across the agribusiness sector opened me up to learn from divers experiences.

Soilless Farm Lab hosted her first edition of the CEO's Work and Learn training. It was a great time rubbing minds together with seniors in the field of agriculture.

The training featured in-class lecture, field trip, CEO's sharing experience with Soilless Farm Lab students, business management, financial accounting, etc.

Let me share few of the numerous lessons I learnt:
📍 Your business board of directors should contain at least an expert in that field of agribusiness, at least an expert that knows about finance and lastly all the board of directors must have leadership and management experience

📍Your agribusiness must create and deliver value to people's life

📍Your market matters most. Understand what the market has for you

📍 Define your brand identity. Start by defining what your agribusiness stands for

📍 Engage the power of social media. Social media platforms offer a direct line of communication with your audience

📍 Embrace feedback either positive or negative

📍Give back to your host community. Engage your local community through events, workshops, support initiatives etc.

📍 Understand what makes you break even.

📍 Your agribusiness should not contribute harm to the environment (Global warming). Find a way of mitigating Green House Gases

📍 The 4 C's of Negotiation are: Common interest, Conflicting interest, Compromise and Conditions

📍 Two types of bookkeeping system: Single entry and double entry bookkeeping

Let me add one more:

📍 Have budget on how to spend your money. Refrain from using business money to do giveaway for family and friends. Let business be business.

The list is endless
