ALIVE THROUGH CHRIST

Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

Memory Verse: "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." 1 Corinthians 15:22, NIV

One of my secondary School classmates was a Prince whose father was a king in a nearby town and was very rich. At weekends, I used to visit him in the palace, and we read and study together. Sometimes, the king ask one of the drivers in the palace to take me home in one of the king’s car.
Like I enjoyed certain royal benefits because my friend was a Prince, all those who believe in Jesus as their Lord and Saviour will also enjoy unlimited benefits in God. A very important benefit we stand to enjoy is being fully alive. To be alive is to have the consciousness of God's presence and God's grace in your life, and to live a prevailing life over Satan, sin and darkness. To be alive in God also refers to the ability to walk with God here on earth and having the assurance of a blissful life hereafter.
Are you truly consciously walking with Jesus? Are you enjoying all His benefits? If your response is not in the affirmative, rise up today and pray unto God to revive you by His Holy Spirit so you can begin to enjoy all the benefits attached to His saving grace.

Insight: Christianity is more than a religion; it is a personal and daily walk with Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Almighty God, stabilize my feet on the path of righteousness always in Jesus name!

HIS RESURRECTION, OUR HOPE

Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2022

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 15: 12-19

Memory Verse: "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied." 1 Corinthians 15:19, NIV

Before May 6, 1954, the whole world believed that no one can run a mile less than four minutes. But Roger Bannister completed one mile race in three minutes fifty-nine seconds and four micro seconds on the said date. And few months after this record, several other athletes completed one mile race less than four minutes. Once Roger Bannister broke the world record, he gave hope to other athletes that they can do it.
Before Jesus died and rose from the dead, the grave was believed to be the final destination for humankind. But once Jesus came out of the grave, He crushed death, and there was hope of resurrection for all believers. The Bible says, "but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:10, NIV).
His resurrection brings meaning to our existence here and gives us awareness of life hereafter. Nothing here on earth can subdue you; death no longer has power to overwhelm you, neither can darkness deem your light. Share this good news with someone today!

Insight: Hope in Jesus’ resurrection is all we need to live a fulfilled life.

Prayer: God, help me to always fix my eyes on the finishing line in Jesus name!

"FORGIVE AND FORGET"
“Put up with each other.” Colossians 3:13 CEV

BUILDING A successful relationship calls for focusing on the other person’s strengths instead of their weaknesses. Concerning marriage, Benjamin Franklin said, “Keep your eyes wide open beforehand and half shut afterwards.” It’s a mistake to rush into a lifetime relationship without taking time to get to know the other person. Without due diligence on the front end, you are sure to have problems on the back end. But an important relationship principle lies in learning to forgive and forget. American politician Edward Wallace Hoch is attributed with saying, “There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, that it hardly behooves any of us, to talk about the rest of us.” Forgetting can be harder when the offense is great. Small offenses can usually be forgiven quickly; big ones involve a healing process. But until you decide to forgive and forget, the process can’t even start. Paul writes: “Be gentle, kind, humble, meek, and patient. Put up with each other…forgive anyone who does you wrong, just as Christ has forgiven you. Love is more important than anything… It is what ties everything…together” (vv. 12-14 CEV). One author puts it this way: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can‘t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” In other words, when it comes to facing facts you can’t change, pray for grace and learn to live with them. Why do we need to forgive and forget? Because God says so! You are not designed to carry the physical and mental stress that comes with harboring resentment. Added to which, “You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out” (Galatians 6:1 MSG).

"THE RESURRECTION; GOD’S “STING” OPERATION"
“O Death, where is your sting.” 1 Corinthians 15: 55 NKJV

IN A “sting” operation, law enforcement agents set the bad guy up in order to bring him down. That’s what God did to Satan at the cross. For three days it seemed as though Satan had won. Then Jesus rose from the dead and turned his plans upside down: “He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them at the cross” (Colossians 2:15 NLT). The thing Satan feared most, the birth of a church with the power to change the world through the gospel, had come to pass. “The rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord” (1 Corinthians 2: 8 NLT). Christ’s enemies even tried to stop the truth of the resurrection from getting out: “They decided to give the soldiers a large bribe…‘You must say, “Jesus’ disciples came during the night while we were sleeping, and they stole his body’”…So the guards accepted the bribe and said what they were told to say” (Matthew 28:12-15 NLT). Normally hatred for a person ends when they die. So why then do some people hate Jesus? Because the resurrection is the ultimate proof that He is Lord! Indeed, you cannot be saved unless you believe in the resurrection: “For if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10 NKJV).

ALL BECAUSE OF ME

TEXT: MATTHEW 27:32-44

“Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!’” Matthew 27:39-40, NIV

A woman had a scary look that made people avoid her. One day, her daughter brought few friends home from school, her friends were scared of her mother. The friends derided the girl, and she felt ashamed. On getting home, she shamefully asked her mother why she looks like a monster. The mother told her: "When you were ten months old, fire caught our house while you alone were sleeping in the room. Against people's advice, I ran into the inferno to rescue you alive but I came out badly burnt. This look is because of you."

People hurled insults on Jesus Christ while He hanged on the cross. They took Him for a helpless criminal; they thought He was a victim. But they were wrong. Jesus Christ chose to suffer for sins He didn't commit. He surrendered Himself to be beaten and molested by cruel people so we all can be saved.

He gave up Himself to be crucified to the rugged cross because of your sins and my sins. The daughter of the scary mother had a change of mind when she was told the reason her mother's face was badly scarred. What are you given up to follow Christ? Bear in mind that Christ gave it all up for us, so we all can be saved.

Insight: Christ is not pleased anytime you fall into sin and compromise with sinners.

Prayer: God, renew your Holy Spirit in my heart and let Your love conquer my heart.

BETTER WITH EVERY TRIAL

RUTH 1:1-21;

Bitterness is a pain that leads to malice, anger or resentment. When Naomi, with her husband and two children left Bethlehem-Judah at a time of famine to Moab, she hoped to find greener pasture. Contrary to her expectation, she found only misfortune. She lost all she cherished the most - Her husband and children therefore she returned to Bethlehem-Judah empty and preferred to be called by the name “Marah” (bitterness) rather than the name “Naomi”(pleasant). When Job was afflicted, had groaned and complained and even cursed his birthday, he was not bitter against God. Therefore when God restored him, He blessed the later part of Job more than his beginning. There is no situation that God cannot turn to an advantage for you. Let not the weight or severity of your affliction make u believe righteousness doesn’t pay. Trials of faith come to make you better not bitter. It isn’t the end. God is behind the scene and he will turn everything to your advantage. Many times we are tempted to ask “Oh God, why me?” And the answer is simply “Because you can bear it”. You need to realize that all things are working for good. James 1:2-4 says "My brethren count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptations; knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience, but let patience have her perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing". Ask God to make you better not bitter with every trial of faith that comes your way.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I thank you for everything you are doing in my life. I understand that my trials of faith are to make me better not bitter. I repent of the times I have become bitter because of my situation. Please Lord; turn every negative situation in my life to an advantage for me in Jesus Name. Amen.

GOOD FRIDAY – FRIDAY APRIL 15, 2022.
"HE DID IT WITH YOU IN MIND"
“They made a crown out of thorn branches and placed it on His head.” Matthew 27: 29 CEV

THE HYMNIST Isaac Watts wrote, “See from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’re such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?” Jesus wore a crown of thorns so you could wear a crown of glory. Thorns in Scripture represent sin. In Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed, God said, “The ground will be under a curse…[…it] will produce thorns” (Genesis 3:17-18 CEV). Later He told Israel that unless they purged the land of their enemies, “they will be like…thorns in your sides” (Numbers 33: 55 NCV). Solomon cautioned: “Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road” (Proverbs 22: 5 NLT). And Jesus warned, “You can detect them by the way they act, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit. You need never confuse grapevines with thorn bushes” (Matthew 7:16 TLB). A well-known author writes: “The crown of thorns Jesus wore represented all our sins. As we were caught in the brambles of envy, anger, shame, discouragement, guilt, bitterness, and unforgiveness, so Jesus, who knew no sin, became ‘an atoning sacrifice for our sins’” (1 John 4:10 NIV). Not once did Christ use His supernatural powers for personal comfort. With just a word He could have transformed the hard earth into a soft bed…hurled the spit of His accusers back into their faces…and paralyzed the hand of the soldier who braided the thorns. But He didn’t. Instead, ‘He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to Christ’s cross’” (Colossians 2:14 NLT). And He did it with you in mind. Amazing!

MOCKED FOR OUR SAKE

Date: Friday, April 15, 2022

Bible Text: Matthew 27:27-31

Memory Verse: “Then they spat on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again” Matthew 27:30, NIV

When Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, his Soldiers took Him and had a filled day mocking and tormenting Him. They stripped Him of His robes, forced a crown of thorns on His head and bowed before Him and hailed Him as the king of the Jews. They further spat on Him, struck Him on the head before leading Him to be crucified.

All that Jesus suffered were not because He was a criminal. But He took the place of sinners and was humiliated and mocked, beaten and battered for our sake before He was ultimately crucified and died for our sins.

The mockery and pain that Jesus suffered for your sake must not be in vain. As we commemorate His ordeals, it will be a good time to reflect on His sacrifice for you. Have you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior? Remember, He was mocked for your sake. The shame, the reproach, the suffering, and ultimately the death He suffered were for your sake. He took your place to pay the penalty for sin. You should have suffered but He replaced you in the suffering that you might gain eternal life.

Insight: If Christ gave Himself for us, nothing stops us from offering our lives to Him.

Prayer: Lord, help me respond appropriately to your sacrifice for me.

"LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY (2)"
“Our competence comes from God. He has made us competent.” 2 Corinthians 3: 5-6 NIV

DAVID WAS “on a roll.” He kept winning battle after battle. He had the Midas touch; everything he touched turned to gold! But success can go to your head, and David wasn’t exempt. He started wondering, “Just how strong are we?” At that point, he conducted a census and discovered he had “one million one hundred thousand [fighting] men” (1 Chronicles 21: 5 NIV). That could tempt any of us to think, “With an army this size, and given our track record of success, who needs to pray for God’s help or ask Him for a plan?” That was the point at which God stepped in and judged David, and seventy thousand Israelites died needlessly (See v. 14 NIV). So here is another aspect of leadership you need to be aware of: Your mistakes have the potential to hurt others. You’re not just accountable to those who are over you; you’re responsible for those under you. After all, if your good decisions have the ability to bless and guide people, your bad decisions have the potential to harm them. “David said to God, ‘Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd, have sinned and done wrong…let your hand fall on me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people’” (v. 17 NIV). God graciously answered David’s prayer, and judgment was lifted from Israel. So, you need God’s guidance for your own sake, the sake of the people around you, and to give you the grace to accept responsibility when you fail. Don’t try to hide your failures, blame others, or run from God. Acknowledge them, grow through them, and go on to become wiser.

“CRUCIFY HIM”

Date: Thursday, April 14, 2022

Bible Text: Matthew 27:15-23

Memory Verse: “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah? Pilate asked. They all answered, ”Crucify him!” Matthew 27:22, NIV

Victor Hugo said: “I have examined the death penalty under each of its two aspects: as a direct action, and as an indirect one. What does it come down to? Nothing but something horrible and useless, nothing but a way of shedding blood that is called a crime when an individual commits it, but sadly called “Justice” when society brings it about.”

Although it was obvious that the crowd had no real offense to accuse Jesus but they chanted “crucify him” “crucify him” they were willing to shed innocent blood and to bear the guilt of doing so (Matthew 27:24-25). They were obviously instigated by the devil. The Jews forced the hand of the law to clamp down on an innocent blood.

Fortunately for us and unfortunately for the devil and the people he instigated, the death of Jesus, particularly the shedding of His blood was ordained for the remission of our sins but for the destruction of the works of Satan (Colossians 2:13-15). Please, never be involved in any form of evil. Bear no false witness against anyone, especially when such action leads to the destruction of such person.

Insight: The blood of Jesus saves sinners and destroys the works of Satan.

Prayer: Help me Lord, never to contribute to or support evil.

"LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY (1)"
“Satan…incited David to take a census of Israel.” 1 Chronicles 21:1 NIV

FRESH FROM a major victory over the Philistines, King David made a major mistake. Instead of trusting God for his next battle, he conducted a census designed to measure his military power and determine his chances of winning. As a result, seventy thousand Israelites perished. This story teaches us three very important lessons about leadership responsibility: (1) As a leader, you’re Satan’s special target. He knows that in order to get to others, he must go through you, so he will use every strategy he has to bring you down. “Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census.” The average board of directors would probably have considered it a good idea, but God saw it as an act of arrogance and unbelief. (2) Don’t be presumptuous. Don’t let your last victory make you overconfident about your next battle. There will never be a time when you don’t need God! The fact that God had just granted David a great victory should have made him more, not less, dependent on God. Paul wrote, “Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent” (2 Corinthians 3:5-6 NIV). (3) Listen to wise counsel. Joab, one of David’s generals, warned him he was making a grave mistake. “The king’s word, however, overruled Joab” (1 Chronicles 21:4 NIV). You may have great gifts, but you don’t have all the gifts. Where you have blind spots, others often have 20/20 vision. “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14 KJV), so listen to the people God put in your life to guide and protect you.

*SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST*

TEXT: LUKE 19:1-10

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10, NIV

Bishop David Oyedepo believes that he was commissioned into the gospel ministry with the following statement. “The hour has come to liberate the world from all oppressions of the devil through the preaching of the word of faith, and I am sending you to undertake the task.” Every Christian has this kind of calling.

Jesus was very clear about His mandate to save the lost souls that He went about seeking people who are lost. He preached in different places. He was conscious of people’s need of salvation. In today’s passage, we observe how in spite of the crowd and the criticism of the people, Jesus was rather moved by Zacchaeus’ need of salvation. He went to be with Zacchaeus in his house and brought salvation to him.

We must be like Jesus. There are lost souls in different locations round about the world and we need to go and seek them to preach the good news to them, and encourage them to reciprocate to others. Since our Lord came to seek and save, we also must continue to seek and save sinners. Jesus saved you and commissioned you to seek the lost.

Insight: The Master has left us with a commission to seek and save the lost.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be true and focused in soul winning.

GOD IN EVERY DISTRESS IV

PSALM 107:23-31

For the past three days we have considered the fundamental and major needs of man- habitation, food, health, freedom which the devil sends distresses to. Today, we shall be yet considering an aspect that is faced with challenges and how God is able to bring us out of the distress associated with that aspect. To survive, man needs to engage in some form of economic activity. Some in professional pursuit, some in businesses, farming, trading etc. The Psalmist in our text refers to those who are exposed to dangers at sea. Though the Israelites didn’t deal much in merchandise, yet their neighbours the Tyrians and Zidonians did, and for them is this part of the Psalm referred. Mariners, merchants, fishermen, passengers and all those that do business in great waters are exposed to related hazards such as tempests, stormy winds and waves. When these winds beat against their lives, vessels and cargo, they cry unto the Lord and He brings them out of their distresses. He makes the storm calm and the waves still. In the course of our economic activities, we are exposed to many risks like failure, bankruptcy, harsh business environment, unfavourable economic policies of government, competition, loss etc. The devil who is chief at destroying any profitable venture toss our businesses and means of livelihood and sometimes we get to our wits’ end not knowing what to do or who to turn to for help. It is at such time we should cry out to God. Are you at the verge of closing up your business because of huge debts? Are you at the verge of losing your job because of imminent downsizing in your sector? Have you failed several times because of the risk associated with your line of business? Don’t be discouraged, God is able to calm every storm against your business or work. He will cause a quiet in your place of work and the odds won’t be against you any longer. He will bring you to your desired haven. He will bring you to your place of promotion in business and work. He will enlarge your borders in business and work from today in Jesus’ name.

PRAYER: Almighty Father, I thank you because you are capable of calming all my business storms. Still every storm against the works of my hand in Jesus’ name.

"UNDERSTANDING YOUR WILLPOWER"
“Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself…have a sane estimate of your capabilities.” Romans 12: 3 PHPS

WE HAVE exaggerated ideas about our capabilities. We like to think we can do it all. But no matter how disciplined you are or how hard you try, without a “sane estimate of your capabilities,” you’re setting yourself up to fail. John Ortberg says: “Willpower is…finite…You don’t get separate stockpiles for different areas…That’s why a long list of New Year’s resolutions is almost certainly doomed…It takes a whole lot of willpower to get on an exercise…program to lose weight…If you add on the list: get on a budget…keep your office clean, and read Calvin’s Institutes every week, you set yourself up for failure…For most of us…our wills get depleted…more quickly than our bodies.” Ortberg suggests these: (1) Schedule your most important tasks for when your willpower is strongest. For many people, that’s the morning. One study shows prisoners have a better shot at parole if their case is heard in the morning when the judge has a higher reserve of willpower and is more inclined to take a chance. (2) Spend willpower wisely by not taking on too many tasks at once, even after you have prayed about them. Generally, God works through your will, and He seldom gives you a free pass to disregard the laws of finitude He created. (3) Set goals—but not too many. Lacking a few, we drift, but having an overabundance means we worry about them, accomplish less, and suffer emotionally and physically. (4) Remember that the one act of your will that replenishes willpower instead of depleting it is surrender. God meant for prayer, solitude, worship, and meditation to be done in a way that restores us.
