Solar for Renters — Can You Install If You Don't Own the House?

"I'm renting. Can I still get solar?" — This question comes from a LOT of people in Nigeria. The answer is more nuanced than you think. 🏠

OPTION 1: LANDLORD CONSENT + TENANT-OWNED SYSTEM: The most common arrangement for renters in Nigeria.
How it works:
- You (the tenant) discuss solar installation with your landlord.
- Landlord provides written consent for installation.
- You own the solar system and can take it with you when you move.
- When you leave, the panels can be removed (it takes few hours to demount panels).
- The value of the system moves with you.

KEY CONVERSATION WITH YOUR LANDLORD:
- "This adds value to your property."
- "You can factor it into a rent increase for the next tenant."
- "I take the system if I leave but I'll offer you first right to purchase it." Most landlords in can agree when they understand these terms.

OPTION 2: PORTABLE/SEMI-PORTABLE SYSTEMS: Smaller systems (1–2kW) can be installed on balconies, carports or ground-mounted on stands. No roof drilling required. These are easier to move if you relocate. Ideal for renters who don't want roof installations.

OPTION 3: LANDLORD-PAID SYSTEM (RENT INCREASE MODEL): Some forward-thinking landlords install solar and recover the cost through a modest rent increase. We help structure these conversations for both parties.

OPTION 4: WAIT UNTIL YOU OWN: If you plan to buy a property within 2 years, it may make more sense to install solar when you own the property. In this case, come to us with your future home plans and we'll design a system for your future property today.
