Today is an interesting day as it marks the United Nations World Environmental Day (WED). This is a unique day that is celebrated every year on the 5th of June. This event dates way back to the year 1974 and has grown globally creating public awareness. It’s now celebrated in over a 100 countries.
It’s a wonderful day as it serves as an opportunity to remind everyone to do something specific to take care of this environment called earth that houses us all. The event is hosted by a particular country every year and this year, China gets the honours of hosting this prestigious event. Every year there is also a theme and this year’s theme is, ‘Beat Air Pollution’.
This seems to be very apt as it's getting clearer daily that more and more people are not even aware of the damage they are causing by their repeated actions which contribute to air pollution all around us. While passing through certain areas, you will be greeted by all manner of pungent and offensive odours. Now, to think about the fact that human beings really live in these areas, gets you wondering how such people can expect to live healthy.
As broad and complex as it sounds, we can all contribute in our own little ways to beating air pollution. Therefore, we would like to suggest some practical ways by which we can all become part of the solution to this menace. However, before going into that, just by way of definition, air pollution can be said to be the introduction into the air, or the presence in the air, of substances which have harmful or poisonous effects.
Some examples of air-polluting substances include smokes and gaseous wastes from our cars and engines, industries, household waste products and chemicals, burning of fire wood and charcoal, dust from building materials such as asbestos etc. The list is endless. Air pollution has also been linked to some respiratory conditions such as Asthma, some cardiovascular diseases, and even death according to research.
Some of the ways we can help to reduce air pollution include:
- Plant Tress.
- Disposing of our wastes at designated sites and not just anywhere (this also means not throwing waste out of our cars into the bush or the main road)
- Burning waste products in incinerators and not just in open air.
- Conserve energy at home, work and everywhere you go.
- Carpool (many people taking a trip with one car to reduce exhaust fumes generated from many cars), walking or riding a bike when possible.
- Ensure that you service your car on time and use the recommended oils and fuel to ensure that the engine functions optimally.
- Use environmentally safe or friendly materials such as paints, cleaning products etc when possible.
Please help us by contributing to this thread in the comment section other practical ways by which we can all help to beat air pollution especially here in Africa. Looking forward to your comments. Besides, we would love for you to share with us what you plan on doing today to make the environment better and beat air pollution.
