STAYING SAFE DURING FLOODS
Climate change is a pressing issue that affects the world and the environment at large, as we witness increasing instances of extreme weather conditions around the world ranging from flood, drought, cyclone, storm, melting ice, wild fire among others but particularly common to Nigeria is floods, it is crucial to be prepared and take necessary measures to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
Flooding can be a significant threat to life and property. By empowering ourselves with knowledge of safety measures, we can minimize the risks associated with flooding. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe during flood situations:
• Stay updated with local news and flood warnings in your area.
• Be cautious of your movements as well as rising waters when it’s raining.
• Make sure to have enough supplies to last for at least 72 hours.
• Ensure that everyone knows how to turn off utilities, such as gas and electricity.
• Elevate electrical panels, switches, sockets, and wiring above flood levels.
• Seal cracks in your foundation and walls to minimize water entry points.
• Clear gutters, drains, and stream channels of all forms of blockages regularly to ensure water flows freely.
• listen and obey Government evacuation order. Your safety should always be your top priority.
• Do not attempt to drive or walk through floodwaters, because according to America’s National weather service, just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet, and only a foot of water can float most cars.
• Advocate for responsible urban planning, such as avoiding construction in known flood-prone areas and implementing green infrastructure projects.
