We can imagine you already have a 'safety app'. It is your group chat.
Somebody types "abeg call me when you land." Somebody else types "I have arrived." A cousin drops a location pin. Somebody warns the group that Ahmadu Bello Way is flooded and to branch through the back.
That chat is obviously doing real work. The problem is that it runs entirely on people remembering. Remembering to send the message. Remembering to notice that the message never came. And when something does go wrong, the group is scrolling upward asking the same question, which is: where was she last?
We are building FlagRisk to take the remembering out of it.
Tell it you are travelling and when you expect to arrive. If you go quiet past that time, your circle is told, with your last known location. You do not have to send anything, which matters, because in the moments that count you usually cannot.
Hold the panic button and your circle gets a silent alert with your live position. Nothing sounds on your phone.
See a flooded road, a bad checkpoint, a spot people should avoid tonight. Flag it. Your circle sees it, and so does the next person walking that way.
Two years ago we asked this network to fill in a survey about exactly this. Three hundred of you did. That app now exists, and it is ready for people to test it out.
Testing starts on the 20th of August. You install the Android or iOS build, live your normal week with it, and tell us what is broken, confusing, or missing.
For testing, what you get is one year of Premium access at launch, and a seat in the WhatsApp group with the founders, which becomes the first FlagRisk Inc community.
