ONE YEAR LATER: REMEMBERING ALHAJI AMINU ALHASSAN DANTATA
Exactly one year ago today, June 28, 2025, Nigeria bid farewell to one of its greatest businessmen, philanthropists, and elder statesmen.
Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata passed away at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy built not only on wealth, but on humility, service, and compassion.
For many Nigerians, especially across Northern Nigeria, he was more than a successful businessman.
He was a mentor.
A bridge between generations.
A man whose quiet generosity changed lives without seeking applause.
Born on May 19, 1931, into the renowned Dantata trading family of Kano, Aminu Dantata expanded his family's commercial legacy into one of Nigeria's most respected business empires.
His interests stretched across real estate, construction, petroleum, manufacturing, agriculture, and finance.
He founded Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd. and was also one of the promoters of Jaiz Bank, helping to advance non-interest banking in Nigeria.
Despite his immense success, Alhaji Dantata became equally respected for his philanthropy.
He supported education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and humanitarian causes across Nigeria.
Through donations to hospitals, educational institutions, and charitable foundations, he quietly improved countless lives.
His influence extended beyond commerce.
He served in public office, including as Commissioner for Planning and Development in the old Kano State, and remained an influential elder statesman whose counsel was sought by leaders across generations.
One Year Later
Although one year has passed since his departure, his legacy continues to live on through the institutions he helped build, the businesses he nurtured, and the countless people whose lives he touched.
His story reminds us that true greatness is measured not only by what we accumulate, but by what we leave behind for others.
