Nigeria's situation is so terrible that you see and hear a new thing each day that will chatter into believing that things are getting better or will get better.
We thought after the endsars protests, the government will start making necessary changes geared towards the needed change, but alas and regrettably, we are still where we were! This is a country that has defied change even though it yearns for it.
The new order by the inspector general of police to boost the morale of his men by asking them to defend themselves, has not addressed the corruption, brutality and gross extortions of the police, which methinks should have been greatest concern of the inspector general and police authorities. I thought this vista would have made the police authorities and the inspector general of police to write their names in gold, by working to end the vice in the police force.
His encouragement to his men, to me, means a blank cheque to do whatever they think fit in so far as it is meant to defend themselves against public attack. I see a new and a more brutal and corrupt force, emerging from this order instead of a new and decent police force! Where are we heading to?
On the other hand, Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, doesn't know the implications of asking his men not to fear ICC, but do whatever they think fit, even if it violates their rules of engagement. This is where we are as country, where the Military will deny the killings in Lekki and Lagos State government, too. Who then should be held responsible?
Come to think of the government itself, that has chosen to let those media houses who aired the protests to pay penalty for giving us information on what was happening. Well, to them, nobody should know, and all that happened should be kept confidential. By this the government has proved it is not for the people, and this is the worst government so far in the history of this country.
Let us wait and see the more episodes that will unfold as the days go by.
