Have you ever wondered why employers fail to provide their employees' job descriptions?⁠

Job description or JD is a documented narrative that provides the general tasks, related duties and responsibilities of a position.⁠

In the past week, we conducted random interviews on the streets of Abuja, Nigeria of employees from different organisations to find out if they have documented job descriptions provided them on joining their various employers. 80% of those interviewed indicated that they do not have JDs and wait for their line managers to provide them direction every single day they resume at work. ⁠

Employers need to know that ignoring job descriptions can be risky; as it provides the basis of every recruitment. We hear employers complain about the difficulties in finding good employees that “fit” their organisations. Unfortunately, most times these employers devote inadequate time checking the kind of employees who are and have been successful at their organisations. Doing this provides valuable clues. Some employers take their time to plan their hiring needs carefully but fail to take that vital step of creating job descriptions that accurately capture their business and employment needs for a given position - which leads to the employers incurring financial resources in transaction costs of replacing employees who fail to work out.⁠

A good job description will help with attracting the right employees, directing training needs, employee retention and satisfaction, protecting organisations after terminations and measuring performance.⁠

Employers that devote their time to creating (and updating) job descriptions will find that the benefits to be gained from them exceeds the time spent in developing them.
