In Slovakia, plastic waste is being creatively repurposed into storm drain filters that help prevent clogging during heavy rainfall. These filters, made from recycled plastic, trap leaves, wrappers, and small debris while still allowing water to flow through smoothly.

Simple, durable, lightweight, and easy to install in existing drainage systems, this solution reduces urban flooding and demonstrates how waste can become functional city infrastructure.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀:
In some cities across Africa, plastic waste continues to block drainage systems, worsening flooding during rainy seasons and creating serious public health and infrastructure challenges. Innovations like these storm drain filters show us a clear path forward, turning waste into solutions that build climate resilience.

In many parts of the world, old fishing nets, one of the most harmful types of marine plastic pollution, are being given a second life. Reshaped into smart floating barriers, these nets now collect floating debris while allowing fish and marine life to swim safely underneath. This simple yet brilliant innovation reduces ocean plastic without disrupting ecosystems.

Africa has a similar opportunity and an urgent need.

Africa generates millions of tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in rivers, lagoons, and coastal waters. In cities like the Niger Delta Region (Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers), Epe and Ibeju-Lekki (Lagos State), Accra, Douala, and Dar es Salaam, discarded fishing nets & plastic debris contribute to clogged waterways, worsened flooding, and damaged marine ecosystems that support the livelihoods of millions of fishermen & coastal communities.

At African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation (ASCIF), we are championing circular solutions that turn waste problems into local opportunities:
