Chapter 30: Too Big to Fail
"It was a slow, agonizing descent into corporate chaos. The unraveling started with minor delays—the bank suddenly lacked sufficient cash reserves to pay employee salaries on time. Then, our retail customers arrived at the counters only to discover they could no longer execute simple cash withdrawals; our nationwide branches lacked access to daily liquid funds for basic over-the-counter transactions. Within weeks, the crisis escalated to unpaid utility bills: our branches were cut off from public water lines, waste disposal services abandoned our premises, and vendors refused to deliver diesel to power our generators. With time, our terrified branch staff began actively running away from customers who arrived demanding their life savings back. Our once-beautiful banking halls transformed into dangerous, high-stress environments. Retail customers had placed their complete trust in our institution to guard their hard-earned money and return it upon request, and that sacred financial trust was completely shattered.
Fights broke out across our lobbies; an irate client hurled a heavy office chair across our executive boardroom. Going to work became a physical hazard, forcing our team to slip into hiding or completely switch off our mobile phones to avoid the non-stop, desperate calls from clients begging for updates on when their money would be paid back. Our financial institution had dug a massive financial hole that grew wider by the day, and no volume of incoming capital could ever fill the void. It is a deeply traumatic experience to watch a financial institution implode from within; the profound psychological scar stays with you forever—whether you went through it as an investor, a staff member, a customer, or a corporate stakeholder".
This is a recollection of the beginning and the final days of the end of what would have been the most successful Financial Institution of Nigerian origin and the brilliant men who founded it from someone who saw it all. The Founders had the drive, passion and strategy to rule the world with their ideas...but they did not! Their Business lessons are still valid for for both those who hope to build and those who do not want their Institutions to fail!
