Today, October 1, 2026, Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence. ๐ณ๐ฌ
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becoming the countryโs first Prime Minister. Before independence, Nigeria had been under British influence and colonial administration for decades, while nationalist leaders such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, and Tafawa Balewa played important roles in the struggle for self-government.
After independence, Nigeria experienced periods of civilian and military rule, the Nigerian Civil War (1967โ1970), political changes, economic challenges, and the return to democratic government in 1999. Since then, Nigeria has remained a democratic republic, while continuing to face challenges and opportunities in areas such as security, the economy, education, infrastructure, and national unity.
From 1960 to 2026, Nigeria has travelled a long and eventful road. 66 years later, the Nigerian story continuesโthrough its people, cultures, resilience, struggles, achievements, and hope for a better future.
Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria! ๐ณ๐ฌ๐ May Nigeria continue to grow, prosper, and fulfil the dreams of those who fought for her freedom.
