INTIMIDATED BY CIRCUMSTANCES

Circumstances can be loud. They shout at you that you are too small, too late, too broke, too unqualified. When you look only at the size of your problem, you will naturally feel intimidated. Bills pile up, doors close, people disappoint you — and suddenly you feel like you cannot breathe. That feeling is real, but it is not the final truth.

Being intimidated does not mean you are weak; it means you are human and you have forgotten who stands with you. Circumstances are temporary visitors, but your purpose is permanent. What you see today will not be forever. If you bow to every difficult situation, you will live on your knees. But if you stand tall inside it, you will see that most giants are only shadows when you walk close to them. Remember the African wisdom: "Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors."

Do not let where you are make you forget where you are going. Speak courage to yourself even when your voice shakes. You have survived hard things before, and you will survive this too. God Himself assures you in Isaiah 41:10 — "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Circumstances may set the stage, but they do not have to write your ending.

Remain blessed.

ASK QUESTIONS MORE THAN GIVE OPINIONS

I wonder why some people always rush to give opinions on every issue. A wise person understands that questions open doors while opinions often close them. When you ask questions, you show humility, you show that you are willing to learn, and you invite others to share their wisdom with you. But when you rush to give opinions on everything, you may sound knowledgeable for a moment, yet you stop your own growth. Opinions speak; questions listen.

In this world, everyone wants to be heard, but few truly want to understand. Asking questions makes you a better friend, a better leader, and a better learner. It protects you from shame, from mistakes, and from speaking about what you do not know. As the elders say, "The one who asks questions does not lose his way," and also, "He who thinks he knows everything knows nothing at all."

The Bible teaches us this same wisdom. Proverbs 18:13 says, "To answer before listening — that is folly and shame." And James 1:19 reminds us, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." So choose to be the one who asks, who listens, who seeks to understand. In the end, it is not the loudest voice that is the wisest, but the one who asked the right questions.

Remain blessed.

DON'T BE LOST IN A CROWD

I am looking at today's youth. Why are some not charting a path for themselves? Why get lost in the maddening crowd?

A crowd can be noisy, colourful, and comforting, but it can also swallow you whole if you are not careful. Many people lose themselves trying to belong — they change their voice, their values, and their vision just to fit in. But what is the gain if you are surrounded by many, yet disconnected from yourself? As the African proverb says, "If you follow the crowd, you will get lost in it."

To not be lost in a crowd means to know who you are when no one is clapping. It means having a mind of your own, standing for what is right even when it is not popular. The crowd will always have a direction, but it is not always the right direction. You must have the courage to pause, to question, and to walk alone if necessary.

Remember, you were not created to be a copy. You were created to be a voice, not just an echo. So be in the crowd, but do not disappear in it. Let your light stand out; let your character speak. For as another proverb wisely puts it, "The lion does not lose sleep over the opinion of sheep."

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE SUFFER?

Why do we have people in affluence while others live in abject poverty?

Grateful, obedient, and contented people may not have much in abundance, but they are always spiritually rich.

The low moments of the children of God are just a phase. Those in the valley will climb to the mountain if they meticulously follow Jesus. Follow those who know the road.

Jesus Christ is the due process; focus on His teachings. Most people suffer because they ignore the way; they shun due process. They live a life of deception.

Stop living a life of competition, and be content with what God has given you. Continue to pray, trust and obey God.

BUILD FRIENDSHIP ACROSS CULTURES

I have discovered that the world becomes smaller when you build a friendship that crosses cultures. Suddenly, what you thought was "normal" is just one way of living, and what you thought was "strange" becomes beautiful in its own right. A cross-cultural friendship teaches you that beneath different languages, foods, and traditions, we all want the same things—to be respected, to be loved, and to belong.

Such friendships require humility. You must be willing to listen more than you speak, to ask instead of assume, and to laugh at your own ignorance rather than defend it. It is not about agreeing with everything, but about creating a space where differences can sit at the same table and eat together. That is how prejudice dies — not by debate, but by shared meals and honest conversations.

When you build friendship across cultures, you don't just gain a friend; you gain a new lens to see the world. You become richer, wiser, and more human. In a divided world, choosing to befriend someone different from you is a quiet act of courage and hope.

NEVER FORGET YOUR PROMISES

I have been pondering why people intentionally make false promises in relationships, houses of God, offices, families, schools, markets, etc. A promise is not just words; it is a piece of yourself you give to someone else to hold. In the moment we make them, we mean every word, but life gets busy, convenient, and forgetful. When you forget your promises, you don't just break an agreement — you break the trust someone built around your words.

Your integrity is measured by what you do after the excitement of making a promise fades. Anyone can promise when it's easy, but character is keeping that promise when it becomes inconvenient, costly, or uncomfortable. People may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel when you didn't keep your word.

So before you promise, pause. Promise less, but mean more. And when you do promise, write it on your heart, not just in your chat history. Let your promises be a reflection of your honour — because in the end, a man is only as good as his word.

WIDENING YOUR HORIZON

I have discovered that life becomes richer when we learn to look beyond the boundaries of our immediate experience. Widening your horizon means opening your mind to new ideas, people, cultures, experiences, and possibilities. Sometimes we mistake our present circumstances for the limits of what life can offer. Our elders say, "A narrow mind sees only what is familiar; a wider mind discovers that there are many paths to wisdom, growth, and fulfilment." To widen your horizon is therefore to give yourself permission to learn, to change, and to imagine a future greater than the present.

A person who refuses to look beyond their immediate environment may unconsciously become imprisoned by prejudice, fear, and old assumptions. The world is larger than our village, profession, culture, religion, or personal experience. Encountering other people and cultures does not necessarily diminish who we are; rather, it can deepen our understanding of who we are. Genuine growth comes through dialogue and encounter. We widen our horizons when we listen before judging, learn before rejecting, and appreciate differences without abandoning our own identity.

Ultimately, widening your horizon is an invitation to live beyond the limitations of yesterday. Do not allow one failure to define your future, one disappointment to close your heart, or one environment to determine the full measure of your potential. Scripture reminds us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). Keep learning, keep questioning, keep encountering, and keep dreaming. A wider horizon does not merely give you a bigger view of the world; it gives you a greater vision of what you can become.

GOD'S SILENCE DOES NOT MEAN GOD'S ABSENCE

I have observed that sometimes God seems silent when we pass through suffering, disappointment, uncertainty, or prolonged waiting. Yet divine silence should not be mistaken for divine absence. The elders say, "The one who is not seen is not necessarily absent," reminding us that reality is often greater than what our eyes can perceive. The Bible declares, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Silence can therefore become a sacred space in which the human heart learns patience, trust, and deeper awareness. Even when we cannot hear God, we may still be held by God.

The Scriptures repeatedly show that God can be present even when human beings cannot immediately recognise His presence. The prophet Isaiah speaks of God saying, "Truly you are a God who hides himself" (Isaiah 45:15). Likewise, the Qur'an assures believers: "And He is with you wherever you are" (Qur'an 57:4). This divine presence is not always accompanied by dramatic signs or immediate answers. Like the African farmer who plants a seed and waits patiently beneath the soil, we may not see what God is doing, but something may already be taking shape. "However long the night, the dawn will break," declare the elders. Waiting, therefore, need not be wasted time; it can be a period of preparation, growth, and transformation.

When God appears silent, let us resist the temptation to conclude that we have been abandoned. The silence may be inviting us to trust beyond what we can see, to pray beyond what we can understand, and to hope beyond what circumstances seem to permit. The Qur'an says, "Indeed, Allah is with the patient" (Qur'an 8:46). At the same time, the Bible encourages us, "Those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength" (Isaiah 40:31). Human beings may withdraw, circumstances may change, and answers may be delayed. Still, divine presence is not measured by noise or immediate results. God's silence is not emptiness; sometimes it is the quiet language of a presence that calls us to deeper faith, patience, and hope.

Remain blessed.

WHAT FRUIT IS YOUR LIFE PRODUCING FOR GOOD?

Take a careful look at yourself and see the great investment God has made in you. Is mankind benefiting from the talent God has deposited in you?

Is the Church benefiting from you in its growth? Are you winning souls for God through your behaviour? Do you forgive those who offend you?

The best way to show gratitude to God is to use the talent and grace He has given you to win souls for Him. You are called to be Christlike so that the fruit you produce will be a blessing to everyone.

The cornerstone of the world is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. His greatest interest is to bring salvation to everyone. Allow Him to reach people through you. Communicate Christ and His teachings. The feast of the Archangels is an opportunity to love, forgive, serve, pray and preach more of Christ and less of ourselves.

Lessons from the homily inspired by the Holy Bible (Isaiah 5:1-7, Philippians 4:6-9 & Matthew 21:33-43) delivered by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Alikali at Archangels Catholic Church, Gadumo, Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria.

AUTHORITY TO TRAMPLE ON EVIL

I have seen that evil is on the ascendancy. I declare to you that God has not called you to be afraid of evil; He has given you authority to trample on it. You are not a victim begging for mercy from the devil, you are a child of God with power in your mouth and fire on your altar. Jesus said clearly, _“Behold, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you”_ — Luke 10:19. That means sickness, witchcraft, oppression, failure, and demonic manipulation are not meant to be on your head; they are meant to be under your feet. Until you know who you are, you will keep running from what you should be trampling upon.

This authority is not in your title, it is in your position in Christ. When you are in Christ, you are seated far above principalities and powers — Ephesians 2:6. The devil is not afraid of your noise, he is afraid of the knowledge you have about your authority. Many believers pray from a position of weakness when God has made them soldiers. You don't need to beg evil to leave; you command it to leave. You don't negotiate with darkness; you crush it. Stop crying about what the enemy is doing and start exercising the authority that God has given you. The same mouth that has been complaining is the mouth God wants to use to decree victory.

Therefore, rise and use your authority today. Trample on fear, trample on sickness, trample on that cycle of failure and stagnation. Speak the Word, pray in the Spirit, and refuse to bow to evil. Evil only prevails where authority is silent. From today, let the devil hear your voice and tremble, because you have finally remembered — you are not powerless. You have AUTHORITY TO TRAMPLE ON EVIL, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Remain blessed.
